Comedian Will Ferrell made a surprise appearance at the Australian Open last night, crashing the Channel 7 broadcast and making me temporarily care about tennis.

The Anchorman star was in the crowd during Roger Federer’s round one match against Slovenian Aljaz Bedene, and was later invited onto the court to ask the grand slam champion a couple of questions.

“Roger, tonight you seemed like a gazelle out there on the court,” said Ferrell, setting the tone for his interview right off the bat.

“Would you describe your game as [like] a silky gazelle?”

“Maybe. Maybe not” said a cautious Federer. “Don’t they get eaten at the end?”

“Not if they’re fast enough,” Ferrell shot back.

The comedian also asked about the secret to Federer’s ongoing success, questioning whether he was “a witch or a vampire.”

That was before getting into the nitty-gritty of the tennis pro’s eating habits.

“There’s a rumour in the men’s locker room that you love coming to play down here in Melbourne and your secret to fitness is you only eat wombat meat,” said Ferrell.

“Is that true?”

“That is untrue,” said Federer.

“Have you ever tasted wombat meat?” asked Ferrell.

“I have not. Should I?” asked Federer.

“It is delicious,” Ferrell assured him. “The national food of Australia.”
