Well Duh: Kyle And Jackie O Prank Call Segment Called ‘Wong Number’ Labelled As Racist
Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O have offended listeners with their radio show.
Oh my fucking god.
But this time it has involved calling two Chinese restaurants, making fake orders and then putting the two restaurants on the line with one another, in a segment they actually called ‘Wong number‘ – said by Sandilands in a particularly racist manner ala Yunioshi from Breakfast at Tiffany’s
This is 2016, btw. Yep, let that sink in.
Since the segment was aired, listener and co-founder of Australia Asian Alliance Erin Chew has created a Change.org petition, which in the past day has amassed more than 1500 signatures. Chew explains on the page, saying:
“The purpose was pretty much about confusing Chinese takeaway stores when ordering on the phone.
Their main motivation was to humiliate hard working mum and dad businesses for the sake of improving their ratings at the expense of a few cheap laughs and jokes about being Chinese”
She also has demanded for “a formal apology to be made on the air and to the Chinese takeaway stores by both Kyle and Jackie O. Secondly to ensure the Wong Number segment is canned for good. I think for these hosts to lose face will hopefully teach them a lesson that racially motivated jokes such as these are not acceptable.”
The team responded to the petition saying that the calls are recorded and permission was granted by the takeaway workers, who were happy to have the calls aired. Adding:
“The Kyle & Jackie O Show have responded to Erin Chew and explained that the ‘Wrong Number’ segment has been recorded with many takeaway and service providers,” they told Daily Mail Australia.
But what they are not acknowledging is by renaming the segment ‘Wong number’ this is blatantly racially motivated, using offensive language that is a systematic part of a larger discourse of racism.
