The Top 10 Songs From ‘Wild Child’, 10 Years On
Has there been a film with such profound cultural and political impact since 2008’s Wild Child?
Almost 10 years since its release, audience members across the globe have adored Emma Roberts, and her rag-tag bunch of British pals, who were later placed in feminist halls of fame across the globe.
While the success of Wild Child will never be forgotten (James Cameron could only dream!), its equally “talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show-stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before”, soundtrack is often overshadowed.
Which is why it is only fitting to recount the top 10 songs from the soundtrack that distilled noughties-pop in an incredible and wild (haha!) fashion.
10. ‘Shut Up and Drive’ – Rihanna
An absolute ’00s classic starts off the film but in this instance, the track is HORRIBLY underutilised. Imagine Emma Roberts driving her dad’s merc off the waterfront with @badgalriri’s timeless bitch-bop accompanying the scene. It might have been a bit more life-threatening but she isn’t called a ‘Wild Child’ for nothing!
9. ‘Chasing Pavements’ – Adele
Poppy kisses I Am Number Four in a cafe and Adele plays in the background. It’s fine. It’s cute. But it’s not on the Spotify soundtrack. Which! Is! Sad!
8. ‘Kiss With A Fist’ – Florence and The Machine
Our girl Flo (and her machine) helped Poppy meet her roomies and eventual friends for eternity.
7. ‘Real Wild Child’ – Sarah Harding
The film’s closing track is an astounding rendition of Iggy Pop’s ‘Real Wild Child’ (which, in fact, Iggy Pop wrote after being extremely moved by reading the original script of the film… crazy!). The track gets a modern spin by someone called Sarah Harding, who apparently didn’t release anything else after and must’ve realised that this was her peak. Of the two versions, the film’s cover is superior. Sorry Iggy Pop, you Iggy flopped!
6. ‘Set Em Up’ – Imran Hanif
Okay, this song isn’t on the digital soundtrack either and honestly on its own it’s trash. But it’s accompaniment with this scene, paired with the Abbey Mount Lacrosse Team’s pump-up dance, is legendary. Watching the girls tear up the lacrosse field made me actually want to play sports? Wild, I know.
5. ‘Come Around’ – M.I.A, Timbaland
Queen M.I.A features when Poppy has her first lacrosse lesson, as the Abbey Mount girls trot around the field with their sticks(?). Who knew that lacrosse was going to make me twerk with my Macbook.
4. ‘About You Now’ – Sugababes
I have the firm belief that this song and this scene is what catapulted thrift shopping into popularity. Sugababes are the most overlooked girl group of our time (listen to ‘Push The Button’ again and tell me I’m wrong). Look at these girls! Trying on hats! Being silly! Having #fun! Who wouldn’t want to try being a charitable KWEEN after watching this?
3. ‘Let Me Think About It’ – Ida Corr, Fedde Le Grand
Now to the greatest trio of tracks within a SINGLE SCENE to ever grace cinema screens. Let’s start with Ida Corr’s and Fedde le Grand’s masterpiece ‘Let Me Think About It’. Watching our rag-tag, British baayyybes strut through the halls of Abbey Mount school for girls, after a few glasses of cab sav, in their latest op-shop getups is such a moment.
2. ‘Say It Right’ – Nelly Furtado
After their absolutely RIDIC entrance to the ball, we reach the calm before the storm with Nelly Furtado’s sultry banger “Say It Right” gracing the Abbey Mount dancers. This is where Poppy makes the ultimate power move and starts dancing with the headmistress’ son! Shock horror!
1. ‘Tambourine’ – Eve
Poppy Moore is a cinematic hero. That’s a fact. When Harriet thinks she is all high and mighty by attempting to sabotage Poppy’s slow dance with one of the guys from Magic Mike by changing the song to ‘Tambourine’ by Eve, the film reaches an echelon unheard of within teen rom-coms.
This is the scene that let ‘Wild Child’ win Best Picture, 3 years in a row! Poppy improvises, adapts, and overcomes by transcending the audience on a dance journey of crumping and dropping it looooow like the ’00s babe she is, while the school cheers in awe. Shake that tambourine, Poppy!

This scene should be in museums, and this scene made me gay.
