WOT: Katy Perry Just Accidentally Incited A National Koala Purge & Animal Activists Are Filthy
Well, this is a story we never thought we’d be writing.
Katy Perry is being accused of inciting violence against koalas after a joke she made in a Myer promo was taken for realz. The department store have since altered the ad and released an apology.
The comment (that has been blown wildly out of proportion) is said at the end of the promo, with Katy instructing her dog Nugget, “let’s go chase some koalas”.
Check it out below (while the video is still available):

These five words are being taken very seriously with animal activists slamming the star for condoning animal abuse. This is to the point where Myer have edited the ‘koala comment’ out of their marketing material and have issued a formal apology.
“We are aware of comments in relation to Katy Perry’s Witness: The Tour advertisement and a particular reference made to koalas. We are currently removing the material which references koalas,” a spokesperson told News Corp.
The controversy was mostly drummed up by Gold Coast wildlife vet and Big Brother alum Claire Madden, who told the Courier Mail she was “sickened” by the Myer ad. SICKENED!
“This is just absolute ignorance from Perry and Myer, and inappropriate on so many levels” she said.
“Perry is a role model to so many young people, and this just destroys all the good work we do to try to encourage people not to let their dogs come into contact with koalas.”
That’s fair enough and I’m all for animal welfare, but these critiques need to consider that the comments by Perry were made off the cuff as a joke. By an American entertainer that probs knows diddily-squat about Australia and our wildlife.
I don’t know if too many Katy fans will watch the ad and feel the irrational urge to hunt koalas as a result of her influence as “a role model” either.
