‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Cast Tributes To Andre Braugher After His Death

Hollywood star Andre Braugher has sadly passed away aged 61. The two-time Emmy winner was known for his role as Captain Raymond Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Detective Frank Pembleton in Homicide: on the Street

The actor stole the show in Brooklyn Nine-Nine as the serious, gay and Black Captain, providing some of the funniest moments in the entire show. His comedic genius was highlighted through wacky cold opens and storylines, acting alongside Andy Samberg, Terry Crews, Joe Lo Truglio, Chelsea Peretti, Stephanie Beatriz and Melissa Fumero. The sitcom ran for eight seasons, and YouTube supercuts of Holt’s greatest lines have racked up millions of views.

The sitcom began in 2013, but Fox pulled the plug after Season 5. After the cast and a bunch of celebrity fans rallied to try and save what’s considered to many as a comfort show, NBC picked the series up for another eight seasons. The final season aired in 2021, so after all that time, it makes sense that his castmates are heartbroken over the news.

His fellow Brooklyn Nine-Nine crew have been sharing anecdotes, photos and memories of their time together. Grab some tissues, because this one’s tough.

Melissa Fumero’s tribute to Andre Braugher.

Melissa Fumero played Amy Santiago – a teacher’s pet that idolised Captain Holt – and she shared some candid photos of their time on set together. The first one showed the pair laughing by the ocean in Malibu, tucked into fluffy blue robes.

“I love this first picture. The moment before that photo is Andre and me sitting on a little wooden deck overlooking the ocean in Malibu. We were having our first, of many, deep conversations…. when out of nowhere a big wave splashes the rocks below us, and we get hit! We get so startled that we jump up and run off the deck…..and then crack up laughing. We were shooting the Beach House episode,” she wrote.

“I will remember all the advice you gave me. I will remember all the times we laughed because your laugh was one of the all-time greatest laughs to have ever existed. I will remember the deep love and loyalty you had for your family. I will remember it every time I ask work to make time for me to be with my family. I will remember how you sent me pictures of Fall trees in NJ because you knew how much I missed that time of year back east. I will remember you calling me Melly Fumé. I will remember so much.”

“I really thought I’d see you again. My deepest condolences to Andre’s family, to Ami, to the boys, and to all his friends and loved ones. It was an honour to be in your orbit for a time, Sir. May you Rest in Peace my friend.”

Terry Crews’ tribute to Andre Braugher.

Terry Crews, who played Brooklyn Nine-Nine Lieutenant Terry Jeffords, was one of the first cast members to pay tribute to his friend and co-star. “Can’t believe you’re gone so soon. I’m honoured to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared eight glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent,” he wrote.

“This hurts. You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you. Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness and your friendship. Deepest condolences to your wife and family in this difficult time. You showed me what a life well lived looks like.”

“Rest in Peace, Andre. I love you, man.”

Joe Lo Truglio’s tribute to Andre Braugher.

Joe Lo Truglio, who played the goofy Jake-obsessed Charles Boyle in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, said his heart goes out to Andre’s wife and three children during this sad time.

“So many wonderful stories will be told about Andre but for now, all my love goes to his wife Ami and his three boys, who he loved very much and flew back every weekend from the show to be with. We all know how powerful an actor he was, but even more, Andre knew exactly well his most important role and was deeply proud of it,” he wrote on Instagram. “He spoke often about his sons and knew how lucky he was to have Ami. I’m grateful to them for allowing us to share eight years with him.”

“He was committed and passionate about the things he loved. And that voice. It laid anchor to the roughest of dialogue. What you probably don’t know is that Andre could sing too, and did often at lunch, belting bassy vocals from his dressing room to whatever new music he found. At first, it was odd because well…*it was Andre Braugher crooning at full volume from behind closed doors*…but then very quickly it made all the sense in the world because the man was so full of song and that’s why the world took notice.”

“I miss him so much already. What an honour to work with a man who knew what it was really all about. I feel blessed and thankful. Miss you Capt Holt. Love, Porkchop.

Marc Evan Jackson’s tribute to Andre Braugher.

Marc Evan Jackson, who played Captain Holt’s husband Kevin for the entire series run, shared a tribute that’s so short, but filled with emotion.

On both X (formerly known as Twitter) and Instagram, he shared a memory from the B99 precinct. In the photo, Andre is hugging Marc from behind, and he simply wrote: “O Captain. My Captain.”

Chelsea Peretti’s tribute to Andre Braugher.

Comedian Chelsea Peretti played Captain Holt’s assistant for five seasons. Her sheer aversion to do anything that her job required constantly made for classic sitcom situations and her choice of picture will make fans smile.

In Season 1, Episode 4, brown-noser Amy Santiago gifts Captain Holt an oil painting of himself created by Terry Jeffords. Chelsea shared a snap of Andre posing with his oil painting while on set.

“Love you. Will miss your dulcet tones. Forever lucky to have gone on such a journey with you. Ringside seat. You were so funny to me and the epitome of still waters run deep,” she wrote.

“I will always cherish our conversations, often with me hanging in your doorway barring your exit, and the insane opportunity to be your sidekick. Is it weird that I am also grieving for what Captain Holt meant to Gina? I really hoped and knew I would see you again. Hate that I won’t.”

Stephanie Beatriz’s tribute to Andre Braugher.

Stephanie Beatriz, who played sarcastic tough detective Rosa Diaz, let a clip from Brooklyn Nine-Nine speak for her. She simply captioned the clip “Andre.” followed by a heart.

The clip in question was from the episode where the usually stoic Captain Holt thanks Rosa for coming out as bisexual. In it, he says: “Diaz, you should be very proud of yourself. I know things aren’t exactly where you want to be right now, but I promise you they will improve. Every time someone steps up and says who they are, the world becomes a better, more interesting place. So, thank you.”

Dirk Blocker’s tribute to Andre Braugher.

Dirk Blocker, who played Michael Hitchcock on the show, called Andre both “fiercely intelligent” and “remarkably kind”.

“Supportive, generous and possessed a deep and extraordinary talent, and had even more to offer. I am devastated. I love him. The 9 years I was able to work with him and to just be in his presence was truly a blessing. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family,” he wrote.
