Applications Are Open For ‘Australian Idol’ AKA The ’00s Are Officially Back
Australian Idol will be making its way back on our screens in 2023 — and applications are open!
(Not to toot our own horn, but we low-key manifested this announcement via our recent TikTok.)
Back in 2020, Channel 7 announced that the network would be bringing back the song contest after over a decade off-air, with hopes of having the show on the roster by 2022. Angus Ross, Seven’s Director of Programming, said at the time: “We can’t wait to bring Idol back to Australian audiences in 2022, putting our prime time content line-up even further ahead of the competition.”

Sadly, we didn’t get the reality show this year, but auditions are now open for those wanting to be the next Jessica Mauboy. Australian Idol is currently searching for anyone aged 15 to 28 who is keen to showcase their talent via video or face-to-face with an Idol producer. And it’s open to anyone in Australia!
Australian Idol aired its last season in 2009, with Stan Walker crowned the final winner, releasing ‘Little Black Box’ as his winner’s single.
Other Aussie Idol success stories include Guy Sebastian, Shannon Noll, Matt Corby, Ricki-Lee Coulter, Lisa Mitchell, Anthony Callea, Casey Donovan, Em Rusciano, and Courtney Act.
But most importantly, let’s not forget the real deal: The Young Divas, who had a rotating roster of alum like Jessica, Ricki-Lee, Paulini, Emily Williams, and Kate DeAraugo.

Nothing else has been said on who will be on the judging panel, or if the OG three — Marcia Hines, Mark Holden and Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson — will be making a return. Regardless, we’re excited to see an Aussie classic make it back to screens and we hope that it brings the nostalgic euphoria we crave.
