But what about the ones we don’t know about?
We did a deep dive into Reddit to compile some of the creepiest places/stories from Australia. Read on if you dare!
Queenstown, Tasmania
“My husband and I drove through there on our honeymoon recently, and had to stop for petrol at this self-serve place that had huge windows filled with bobble heads. The whole town feels like a bunch of old people are going to shuffle out of the shadows and drain the life force from your body.
We kept joking that our car was going to break down on the way out and we’d be forced to stay there the night in ‘horror movie opening scene’ style. And it has a gravel footy ground…” – kekabillie
“My wife and I had the same experience a bit over 10 years ago! We were running out of petrol at the top of that big spiral hill coming into town and I was pretty much able to roll into a station with the engine off. Had intended to have a look around but got the Krusty the clown trampoline ‘you just keep right on drivin’ vibes.” – deleted user.
Jenny Dixon Reserve, NSW
“I got chased down a really dark street going around 140km in a car by a giant white light, there was five of us in the car and we all remember it the same way. It was one meter from the boot and then suddenly vanished. The street is dead straight and the light was around 1.5 meters in diameter and super fucking bright, like perfect white.
Once we got near town it stopped dead and vanished. It’s near a place called Jenny Dixon reserve. Jenny Dixon was murdered and dropped off a cliff nearby. It’s said that her ghost haunts that stretch. I’m very scientifically minded but I have no way to justify that. Super weird.” – mort_goldman68
Outback, SA
“Driving outback SA to the NT (not the main highway) we stumbled into some weird community in the middle of nowhere. About 50 or so houses but not a single soul in sight. Went to the fuel station and no one was working there. Door was open and no one inside. Just had an eerie judging feeling so we just jumped in our car and hightailed it out of there.” – The_Dutch_Canadian
Perth, WA
“18-year-old me and my friend got lost looking for another friend’s dad’s place/land to pick him up. Going down this long road fuck all lighting except high beams, there was this one street light about 50-100 meters up, I see some big black demon looking thing with very clearly red eyes sprint across the road, must of been bigger than a horse think of horror werewolf type thing…
I slow down, look at my friend, he looks at me and says ‘turn this fucking car around right now’ he honestly didn’t have to, I was already doing the fastest U-turn on this farm road of my life and the scary part was not being able to see anything behind, driving away just pitch black darkness due to no head lights/high beams.
To this day, both me and friend have no idea what we seen but I now have a weird mini phobia of not being able to see anything in the darkness behind me… will walk right into a pitch black room but as soon as shit’s dark behind me, it reminds me of that night.” – Asleep-Ad-764
St Marys, Tasmania
“The scariest place I’ve ever been in Australia is a town called St Marys in Tasmania. This town is in the middle of a mountain range and there are only three roads in/out. You drive through the mountains for about 45 minutes and then you find this random town full of houses that all look like they have their own Texas chainsaw massacre happening inside. It’s definitely a hideout for murderers on the run.” – Realistic_Scheme5336
Western Port Highway, Victoria
“I was travelling as a passenger with a friend on the Western Port Highway between Hastings and Somerville in Victoria back towards Melbourne CBD about 10 years ago now and my friend and I witnessed an eerily green forensic suited 7ft tall/200cm man-like ghost on the side of the road shuffling around one of those roadside safety barriers.
When this thing looked up at us and we saw it it had no eyes at all – just black eye sockets. No word of a lie the area was dead quiet and no parked cars, no farm gates open or anything to indicate this was a human doing a prank on unsuspecting drivers or just shuffling around working in the dark.
We got back to the hotel in Melbourne and my friend driving said that she felt like she needed to ask a clairvoyant about what we’d seen. She rang one of the premium service ones (aka $5 a minute or something) and the lady on it said we’d seen the spirit/ghost of a police officer who was searching for clues for a fatal accident that’d happened out there many years ago and even in his afterlife was still searching.” – drewd2020
Wonga Park, Victoria
“A mate and I were out in Wonga Park, near the Yarra River and took a telescope to do some stargazing. We were walking up this track when my mate spotted a satellite slowly moving through the sky, as it does. It passed by two seemingly stationary stars before said stars started moving and following it.” – SilverSovereign
Lemon Tree Passage Road, NSW
“Back in the 2000s, a 20-year-old motorcyclist was killed on Lemon Tree Passage Road by a speeding driver. Apparently now if you drive recklessly along the road late at night, a white light that resembles a motorcycle headlight will start following you and chasing you down. There are several videos of it on youtube, where people believe it’s the ghost of the rider.” – deleted user.
Tyalgum, NSW
“Went there to stay in an Airbnb with some friends over the weekend and the hosts were nice, but super weird and off-putting. The home was lovely but had weird pieces of art everywhere and the layout of the furniture felt ‘off’.
Went into the town to have lunch at the only cafe in town and noticed they had 20+ staff, in a small dead cafe, all young European women in their 20s, and a few older men. This was a couple of years ago, before COVID killed tourism. None of the staff talked to each other, and the atmosphere was so strange. Why so many staff for a cafe with nobody in it? Why is everyone dressed like it’s 1903?
Walked down the street and all the shops had the same vibe. Googled the town and it turns out it’s a massive cult town with some missing persons and various criminal investigations. I got the fuck out of there ASAP.” — Beginning_Computer
Wakehurst Parkway, NSW
“Wakehurst Parkway is haunted by a woman in white. I found this out after cruising down the parkway at 3am on my motorbike. I’ve never believed in ghosts and the like, and I knew nothing about the woman in white prior to getting on the road that night. I was riding along earbuds in, and kept catching reflections of what I though were headlights in my mirrors.
On one of these occasions, I turned to check if there was a car behind me, turned back around and on the side of the road was the figure of a woman. It scared the shit out of me, I turned my head back to look, and there was nothing there. I was terrified. I got home and texted my mate who’s place I’d just left and he goes “Oh yeah, Google that road man, it’s creepy.” — Ironbark_
