Let’s Discuss The Australian Accent In ‘Emily In Paris’ Because WTAF
Season 3 of Emily In Paris has arrived on Netflix to entertain, infuriate, and baffle us all.
The popular Netflix series follows American marketing executive Emily (Lily Collins) as she uproots her life and moves to Paris for a job opportunity. The third season picks up as Emily has to decide whether to stay with Chicago boss Madeline at current firm Savoir, or take the plunge and follow her other superior Sylvie to a new business.
I won’t spoil which route Emily takes, but I will say that all I could focus on during the entire season was the godawful Australian accent heard in one scene.
During episode five, Emily meets with influencer Janine Dubois who is (allegedly) meant to be Australian.
I’m sorry but what the hell is this?
@calamitousthoughts was there not a single australian actress to hire? #emilyinparis ♬ original sound – calamitousthoughts
As one TikTok commenter wrote, “Her accent switching between British and Kiwi,” and another joked, “I’m Australian and I needed subtitles.”
Karl Quinn wrote in the Sydney Morning Herald “her accent sounds suspiciously South African.”
Emily In Paris fans took to Twitter to express their confusion with the odd accent.
That clearly fake Australian accent in #EmilyInParis is hurting my ears.

Australia via…South Africa? East London? The chorus line of Oliver? #emilyinparis pic.twitter.com/HocQ1sFkmt

Just when I thought #EmilyInParis couldn’t get any more laughable, along comes the “Aussie” character Janine, with the worst accent I’ve ever heard. Seriously it’s like the actor took lessons on how to offend every single regional variation of Australian you can get.

Whoever the actress is playing Janine Dubois-she should be banned from ever attempting an Australian accent again. Truly awful #EmilyInParis

OK why did Emily in Paris not just get an actual Australian to play Janine Dubois? This accent is hurting my soul

In the most unsurprising news ever, the actress who plays Janine, Kate Colebrook, is not in fact Australian. She’s a British actress most known for her roles in Call My Agent! and Versailles.
Bless her for her efforts, but I haven’t heard a weirder attempt at an Australian accent since the time The Simpsons came Down Under.
While surely there are some Australian actors is France, I’m kinda obsessed with the Netflix series casting someone who has possibly never heard an Australian speak in their life.
On any other show it might be odd, but it’s somehow befitting for Emily In Paris: a show about an American who moves to Paris but doesn’t know how to speak French.
I’m personally here for Janine and her baffling accent. I hope she returns Season 4 for a round of knifey spoony.
