The New ‘Barbie’ Trailer Is Here And We’re Screaming
Wake up besties, we finally got the main Barbie trailer! It’s not a stretch to say that the Greta Gerwig-directed project is the most anticipated film of the year. (For me, anyway.) Our Aussie queen Margot Robbie takes centre stage, plus it looks smart, witty and hilariously meta.
Barbie also stars Ryan Gosling as Ken, Will Ferrell as Mattel’s CEO and Helen Mirren as the narrator. Warner Bros managed to nab a few other big stars including America Ferrera, Nicola Coughlan, Simu Liu, John Cena and Michael Cera.
The studio dropped the full-length trailer overnight, giving us some more clues about the mysterious plotline. Set to Dua Lipa’s new song ‘Dance The Night’, we’re transported into Barbie’s perfect world, where everybody has arched feet and float around like they’re being held by children.
The first clue that something isn’t right is when Margot’s Barbie asks a question during a high-energy dance scene. “Do you guys ever think about dying?” she says, with a perfectly-timed record scratch putting a stop to the party.
After this, it’s clear that something is seriously wrong with Barbie. Not only does she *gasp* have flat feet, but nothing in her life is perfect any longer.
After a Matrix-esque choice between her idyllic life, represented by a pink high-heel, or exploring the real world, represented by a brown Birkenstock sandal, our heroine reluctantly sets off on a journey. Ken joins Barbie as they try to discover “the truth about the universe”. Of course, there are road bumps along the way, with the Mattel corporation trying to cover up Barbie and Ken’s escape.
An honourable mention has to go to the scene where Barbie and Ken are rollerskating down Venice Beach in eye-popping neon colours. Ever since pap shots of this scene leaked, I’ve been waiting to see Barbie’s big moment when harassed by a passerby, and I wasn’t disappointed.

Not only did we get to see Barbie punch the rude beachgoer (I don’t condone violence, but what did he expect?), but the scene lands Barbie and Ken in jail. As a bonus, we get the best mugshots to ever exist.
As a little easter egg, fans instantly spotted an elderly lady giving Barbie some sage advice. She isn’t named, but it’s possible she’s playing the role of Ruth Handler, who created the first Barbie doll in 1959. Sadly, she passed away in 2002, which makes her line even more poignant.
“Humans only have one ending,” she says. “Ideas live forever.”

I’m probably the most biased person in the world when it comes to this movie but I genuinely think today’s BARBIE trailer was *perfect* & one of the best I’ve seen in so long; the imagery is incredible, the story is set up so well, the tonal balance is terrific, & EVERY bit lands pic.twitter.com/4t5WfWZnJW
