I Love Him But, I Couldn’t Be Friends With Chandler

Could I BE any clearer?

Ever since I watched Friends in the early ‘00s, I knew that that’s what I wanted my life to be like. I wanted to live in New York, I wanted to complain about work while I drank coffee all day, and I wanted to have a Joey, Ross, Phoebe, Rachel, Monica and Chandler by my side for the entire ride.

But now, thanks to Netflix and the power of hindsight, I can confidently say that there is no way in hell I could be friends with Chandler. Like, at all.

Let me start by saying, I love Chandler. I don’t want any Friends fans to come for me in the comments because I am not saying that I don’t like the guy. I am simply saying that I couldn’t be friends with a person like him in real life. Why, you ask? I have four reasons.

Here are the reasons why I couldn’t be friends with Chandler IRL:

#1. His sarcasm would get to me.

As I’ve already said, Chandler is funny. He might be the funniest character on the show. But, recently, I’ve noticed that Chandler’s humour often comes at the expense of one of his friends or someone around him. As a result, you’d have to have pretty thick skin to deal with Chandler’s constant jabs at you. Remember when the Friends squad finally had enough and asked Chandler to give up making jokes for a week? He couldn’t even do that

#2. He gives the worst advice ever.

After Chandler accidentally convinces David to propose to Phoebe even though she isn’t over her ex-boyfriend Mike, Monica yells at him saying: “You are not supposed to give advice.” It’s a hilarious moment, because it’s true. Chandler giving bad advice isn’t isolated to that one incident. Not at all.

Remember the time Chandler convinced Ross to list the pros and cons of Rachel and Julie in order to pursue one of them as a girlfriend? What kind of objectification bullshit was that? He doesn’t cop all the blame because Ross and Joey went along for the ride but the moral of the story, we do not want to be friends with Chandler for this shitty advice. No way!

#3. I couldn’t trust him to be there for me.

Chandler

I love Chandler, but is he a good friend? I’m not sure.

The reason that I think that I couldn’t rely on him stems from the time that he fell asleep during Joey’s blockbuster World War 1 movie premiere. Can you imagine being an actor, only being allowed to bring one person to the premiere so you take your closest friend and then they fall asleep? Nup, no. Hate it.

#4. He’s ruthless to his mates online.

Chandler

In this social media age, I need to be able to trust what my friends put online for the world to see. Chandler, I can not trust.

Let me refresh your memory by taking you back to the Season 9 episode ‘The One with the Memorial Service’, where Chandler posted online saying that Ross was dead. I can’t have my friends posting that I’m dead online! In this day-and-age? In the era of fake news spreading quicker than real news. Absolutely not.

Again, I can’t stress enough that I think Chandler is hilarious and he makes me laugh every time he’s on-screen but, there is no way in hell, I want to be friends with him. Not. One. Bit.

But you know who I could be friends with… Ross!
