I Can’t Stop Thinking About The Exploding Penis Scene In ‘Gen V’
I didn’t think when I started working at Punkee I’d write one story about penis accidents, let alone two, but here we are. I promise I don’t have a weird obsession with mutilated penises… but I had to get this off my chest.
I’ve been watching Gen V on Amazon Prime Video – new episodes drop each Friday – and there have already been two concerning but low-key hilarious penis scenes? In fact, the creators dubbed one incident as a “cocksplosion”. The show is a superhero spinoff from The Boys universe, which is actually also slightly obsessed with male genitalia, but I’ll get into that later.
If you haven’t seen the show, it’s based around a group of superheroes at Godolkin University. New student Marie has an awesome but slightly gross power where she can harness the power of blood. Using her blood-bending power, she can attack, defend or completely annihilate an opponent. Or, in her case, accidentally killing her parents when she got her first period. This show is over the top in the best way possible.
In Episode 4, Marie is looking for her roommate Emma, who can shrink to the size of an ant or become really, really big. Emma disappeared after trying to rescue Sam who was being held captive in a shady facility called “The Woods”.
She enlists the help of creepy telepath Rufus, who can use his powers to control other people. He was named after the date-rape drug roofie, so I think you can see where this is going. Marie then blacks out, waking up in Rufus’ room with the naked predator standing in front of her.
Marie instantly uses her bloody power to draw an insane amount of blood into Rufus’ penis. It grew to a horrifying size, before exploding all over the room… and her face. I didn’t expect for the scene to become THAT graphic, but I was left shocked and rather impressed.
The Gen V creators talk about the messy “cocksplosion”.
Michele Fazekas and Eric Kripke told Variety that they dubbed the penis scene as a “cocksplosion”.
“That scene, yes, is about a cocksplosion, but it came from a lot of women in my writers’ room who’ve gone to college and who’ve had these shitty experiences with dudes in college, where you’re like, ‘Is this guy a predator?’,” Michele said. “We never start with the outrageous thing, we always start with the story.”
Eric explained that calling the character Rufus was “intentional”, because the writers saw him as a “walking roofie”. “He’s a guy who is like human Rohypnol,” Michele added, saying it was “fairly satisfying” when his attempted sexual assault ended in a gory disaster.
The creators tackle some dark issues in Gen V, but approach the topics with a certain type of humour. “You have to treat your characters with empathy and humanity. In life, there’s gallows humour, and people make jokes so they can cope. The person can be funny, but the thing that they’re going through is not funny, and you can never play it for a joke,” Eric said. “Is there snarky dialogue in the show? Yes, but [The Boys] universe is not like a Joss Whedon, everything-is-fun-and-light-and-bopping-around.”
Eric Kripke and Michele Fazekas on the giant penis scene in Gen V.
One of the most outrageous scenes in Gen V is when Emma’s date asks her to shrink so she can climb on his penis and stamp on his balls in Episode 1. His penis is SO big in comparison, and the creators had a gigantic replica built especially for the scene.
“We have a practical, five-foot penis and we enhanced it with visual effects,” Michelle told Variety. Eric explained that the scene was about Emma’s sense of self-worth rather than just having a giant penis for the sake of having a giant penis.
“It’s about being goaded and pressured into doing something sexually that she’s not comfortable with, and that really costs her something,” he said.
Why are there so many penis scenes in The Boys and Gen V?
If you’re a fan of The Boys, you might remember that there was another exploding penis scene in Season 3. Termite, who can also shrink down to the size of an insect, was getting intimate with his partner by climbing into his urethra, trying to get to his prostate.
But then… he sneezes and is instantly transformed into his full, human size, causing his partner’s body to splatter across the room. For that particular scene, The Boys put together a giant penis that was 30 feet long and 11 feet high.
So where does the obsession with the humble penis come from?
“When I came onto [Gen V], I realised meeting Eric and Evan [Goldberg], straight dudes love penises. They love talking about them, looking at them,” Michele told Variety.
“So funny. They’re endlessly funny. They’re the weirdest-looking things. They’re just hilarious,” Eric chimed in.
I guess the penis content shall continue to be part of The Boys universe. Long live the screen dick.
