Gossip Girl is back in a big way and the rebooted series has already found itself in hot water after coming for influencer, Olivia Jade, in the premiere.

If Olivia’s name doesn’t sounds familiar, she’s the daughter of Lori Loughlin, you know, the Full House actress who went to prison after she was found guilty of bribery, as part of the college admissions scandal that rocked the US in 2019.

Olivia’s social media career was exploding, before she was outed as receiving preferential treatment when being accepted into the University of South California. Following the allegations, Olivia dropped out of college and put her YouTube on hiatus.

The Gossip Girl scene in question has one of the characters saying, “Everything will be fine so long as you win. Olivia Jade gained followers when her mum went to jail.”

But is this correct?

In actuality, Olivia lost thousands of following in the aftermath of the controversy. According to Distractify, she went down from 1.4 million followers on Instagram to 1.3 million in 2019. Her YouTube channel was hit even harder, dropping from 1.94 million to 1.68 million, as cited in Esquire

Following the episode, Olivia posted to TikTok reacting to the line and simply clapping back: “No, I didn’t.”

For what it’s worth, the series’ creator, Joshua Safran, has backpeddled over the controversial line.

Let’s hope the next Gossip Girl episode starts even more controversies, as I’m lapping up this tea.
