Good news for Grey’s Anatomy fans: the long-running medical drama has been renewed for another season, bringing it to Season 18.

With Season 17 wrapping up as a shorter season, the show looked like it could nearly be done and dusted, with showrunner Krista Vernoff saying she had written a final episode for Season 17 that could be seen as a season or series finale.

Grey’s was fully set in the world of the pandemic in the latest season, with main character Meredith Grey having a rough time, contracting Covid-19 and drifting in and out of consciousness. In her state, she reunited with previous Grey’s Anatomy fan favourites, like George O’Malley, Lexie Grey, Mark Sloan, and of course, her late husband Derek Shepherd.

Ellen Pompeo has extended her contract for another season to continue playing Meredith, with Chandra Wilson (Bailey) and James Picken Jr (Webber) also signing on.

If you’re not up to date on Grey’s Anatomy, SPOILERS AHEAD:

The signing of Season 18 doesn’t come without some sadness. Fans that are up to date with the show will know we bid farewell to DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) this season after he died from a vicious stabbing, and man of all of our dreams, Jackson Avery (played by Jesse Williams), is also set to depart (though under less gruesome circumstances). #Japril4eva

We’re living in such a crazy world but it’s nice that some things will remain the same: like Meredith Grey fighting the good fight, and the fact that Grey’s Anatomy will probably outlive us all at this stage.

Now if we could just bring back Cristina…
