The first season of House of the Dragon has come to an end with a chaotic final episode.

The supernatural series is inspired by George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood and is set 200 years before Game of Thrones. The spin-off has proven to be a huge success with Monday’s episode drawing 9.3 million viewers, making it HBO’s most-watched series finale since the GoT finale.

While episode nine focused on King’s Landing with Queen Alicient declaring Aegon as king, the finale was set in Dragonstone with Princess Rhaenyra learning of her father’s passing, along with Alicient and Otto’s dodgy deeds snatching her rightful claim to the crown. Cheeky!

After a visit from Otto demanding Rhaenyra and Daemon pledge their allegiances to Aegon, this set in motion the plan for the Targaryen royals to seek revenge. Rhaenyra hatched a plan to win over the major houses across the Seven Kingdoms while Daemon strengthened their army by trying to recruit another dragon into the fold.

The episode culminated in Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys visiting Storm’s End in an attempt to win the support of Lord Borros, however Aemond was there waiting for him and still held a grudge over losing his eye as a young boy.

While Lucerys managed to flee by his dragon, Arrax, Aemond chased him while riding a much larger dragon, Vhagar, and the dragons got into a fight while their riders struggled to regain control. It ended in Vhagar basically eating Arrax, along with Lucerys, as Aemond’s face dropped, realising what he’d just done: started a goddamn war.

It was a hectic scene! Meanwhile, Rhaenyra was recovering from miscarriage when she found out her son had just died. This queen can’t catch a break. The finale ended with Rhaenyra shooting a steely gaze down the camera with some real Mad Queen energy.

Bring! On! Season 2!

Until winter returns (in like two years lol), at least we have some hilarious memes to keep us warm.
