Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner’s divorce feels like it was both seventeen years ago, and last week. It was a story that dominated headlines (and my personal brainspace) because the entire world was surprised that the couple weren’t on good terms.

They’d had a textbook fan-favourite relationship – they showed up for each other’s work projects, had a bestie sister-wife situation across the Jonas Brothers and their spouses, two cute kids and a double wedding that tickled the low-key Vegas elopement itch and the grand chateau ceremony in France.

And then it was all over.

Why did Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner break up?

As someone who doesn’t have direct access to their divorce lawyer, I’m not 100% sure. But there were a fair amount of rumours, reports and released legal documents that paint a not-so-cute picture of their situation.

Sources spoke to US Weekly, crediting their different priorities as a major issue in their relationship. “Being a mom on the road is not easy, even when you have unlimited resources,” the source said. “It was just hard for them to settle into a regular routine because of Joe’s career especially.”

There were also slanderous claims that Sophie Turner was a bit of a party girl – which was super strange because there are multiple interviews with her admitting she’s a homebody and she clashes with Joe’s desire to be out on the town.

Sophie also found Joe “controlling,” according to – yep, you guessed it – another source. “Joe liked to flirt a little too much while out in public, but then he wouldn’t like it when she would get too close to her male friends,” they told US Weekly.

And then, there was the whole weird ring camera situation. TMZ reported that Joe saw or heard something in ring camera footage that led him to file for divorce. The outlet did not specify what it was at the time, but US Weekly‘s first source claimed that it was Sophie saying “some not-so-nice things” about Joe to one of her friends. Allegedly, that was “the final straw.”

Post-straw, the couple then had a bunch of crappy legal situations where Sophie was accused of kidnapping her own children because she had them in England while Joe was on his world tour and he allegedly wouldn’t return the children’s passports. Then Joe was papped with the kids, showing their full faces to the press – something that the couple went to great length to avoid when they were together in order to prioritise their children’s privacy.

Finally, Sophie Turner was spotted out to dinner with Joe Jonas’ ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift. An iconic move that saw these photos and the Taylor Swift lyrics “me thick as thieves with your ex-wife” going viral.

Since their divorce was finalised, Sophie has spoken about the split in one interview with British Vogue where she shared how tough that period was for her.

“There were some days that I didn’t know if I was going to make it. I would call my lawyer saying, ‘I can’t do this. I just can’t.’ I was just never strong enough to stand up for myself. And then, finally, after two weeks of me being in a rut, she reminded me that it was my children I was fighting for.”

Beyond this, we’ve only heard once from Joe, when he shared a joint statement from him and Sophie on his Instagram. That is until he dropped new music this week.

What Joe Jonas lyrics are about Sophie Turner?

Splitting off from his band of brothers, Joe Jonas is releasing a new solo album, with the lead single being a track called ‘Work It Out’.

The song is, unfortunately, a bop, and seems to be about getting out of a depressive headspace but there are definitely some nods to his divorce sprinkled through the tune.

“Stop bein’ sad ’cause you’re makin’ the room uncomfortable,” Joe sings about himself in the first verse, emphasising that he’s been feeling “so miserable.”

In the chorus, he reflects on his responsibility to turn his life around – which I appreciate he’s not blaming other people, but instead taking accountability for his actions.

Joe, you think you’re too cool to go to therapy

But look at you, your anxieties got anxieties

You go to bed with a head full of insecurities

Nobody cares what you said back when you were seventeen

Okay, maybe I’m a little dramatic

Okay, maybe I’m a little manic

Some days, I wanna float away

Sometimes I need remindin’

The only question I have is what did he say when he was 17? Because he was barely famous then, so perhaps there were some dodgy high school comments from bby Joe that he wants to bury for good.

I feel like this song is more of a look inwards at his own fuck ups during the divorce period and not so much a dig at Sophie, but this is just the first single off a whole new album called Music For People Who Believe In Love, so I’m not ruling out future song swipes.
