Now it seems that the unravelling of Sophie and Joe’s relationship is finally coming to an end, with new legal documents potentially putting a full stop to the drama. But to make sure you’re up to speed with every detail making the rounds, I’ve mapped out the mayhem below.
Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas’ divorce timeline
Why did Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas divorce?
Great question. While we won’t know for sure the specific reason why the two split, the rumours swirling before their announcement indicated that there was an argument and speculation around Sophie Turner’s penchant for partying.
It’s since come to light that that narrative may have been spun directly from camp Joe, and with that revelation an army of support built up for Sophie Turner.

The two then released a joint statement, posted separately on their individual Instagram accounts saying this:
“After four years of wonderful marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children.”
Joe followed up this statement with an on-stage declaration during his Jonas Brothers tour, saying that unless the news came from his mouth, it shouldn’t be believed. And you can bet that this only made the Sophie/Joe divide stretch further.
How are Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner’s kids involved?
Joe approached this slightly strange period of the separation by going against the rules they had set as a family, and went out in public with their two children.
Despite his wishes for “privacy for us and our children”, and both Joe and Sophie making a conscious effort throughout their kids’ lives to keep them out of the spotlight, Joe just popped out for breakfast with his kids in central New York City. Paparazzi caught the whole thing and suddenly their children’s faces were all over the internet.
There’s also been a bit of a battle at play over where the children were going to be living. In the short term, Sophie has been in the UK filming a new crime series called Joan, which is one of the reasons why the kids are with Joe and the nannies in NYC. While the couple were together, they were looking at buying their “forever home” in England, but now that their relationship has dissolved and Joe is on a world tour, the plan was for the children to move to the UK to be with Sophie and her family.
However, now that legal records of Sophie’s lawsuit against Joe have been released, we can see that Sophie alleges that Joe is withholding the children in the States, well after the date they agreed the kids would move back to the UK.
The documents state: “The Father has possession of the children’s passports. He refuses to return the passports to the Mother and refuses to send the children home to England with the Mother.”
Now, legal spiel can often make things seem more serious and scary then they are in reality, but accusations of “International Child Abduction” is fairly full on in any context.
It was also not so casually dropped in these lawsuit docs that Sophie found out about the divorce through the media – AKA she knew when the rest of the world did.
When will Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner’s divorce be finalised?
Since the abduction lawsuit claims were thrown around, a newly agreed upon interim consent order has been put in place. This is something that both Sophie and Joe have settled on together, and the order requires the kids to remain in the “Southern and Eastern districts of New York, which includes New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley”.
“The parties have agreed to the entry of the attached proposed Interim Consent Order, without prejudice to either party’s claims and defences,” the documents state, per People.
If the order is violated, the documents state that the court has the right to “take or cause to be taken measures under Federal or State law, as appropriate, to protect the well-being of the child involved or to prevent the child’s further removal or concealment before the final disposition of the petition”.
While this may not feel like a ceasefire as such, the fact that “the parties have agreed” is a big step towards a more peaceful spot for them both. However, as anyone who knows anyone who’s gone through a separation will be well aware, this is still very much the start of a long legal journey to a finalised divorce.
