Sometimes an invention comes along that turns your whole world upside-down, and this was me upon discovering magnetic eyeliner and magnetic eyelashes.

I’ve been wearing fake eyelashes since I was about 11 years old. No, I wasn’t a pageant kid. I did calisthenics, which for the initiated is like a mix between being a ballet dancer, a gymnast and a drag queen.

Long before I even learnt how to do my makeup, I knew how to apply fake lashes. I was often the member of the team given the duty of applying the other girls’ lashes, and to this day the smell of eyelash glue gives me PTSD.

I still have nightmares where my eyelids get stuck together.

Eyelash glue is just terrifying to me and I find the whole process of applying fake eyelashes enough to make me accept that sometimes a few layers of mascara will have to be good enough.

Then a few years ago magnetic eyelashes hit the market. I thought I was saved until I tried them and, frankly, they sucked. Clipping two pairs of lashes together over my own just didn’t look natural.

However, over the weekend while scrolling the ‘gram, I noticed an ad for magnetic eyeliner: eyeliner you paint on in place of glue and use with magnetic lashes. This was everything I’ve ever wanted and the tutorials made it look so simple.

What the hell?! This is going to be a game-changer and I just had to get my hands on some to road test.

I tried out magnetic eyeliner with eyelashes and here’s my review:

There aren’t actually many brands in Australia that make magnetic eyeliner but thankfully Manicare has a decent range.

This is what I used for my test:

  • Glam By Manicare Magnetising Eyeliner
  • Glam By Manicare Magnetic Lashes (Natural)
  • Glam By Manicare Magnetic Lashes (Intense)

I ended up ditching the natural lashes in the end because I’m all about that dramatic look.

The instructions were easy to follow and as you can see below, each lash has three little magnets attached.

Starting out, I applied the magnetic eyeliner. It was just like a basic liquid liner. You could apply it fairly thick or thin, but from my research I knew to paint it on pretty thick so the magnets could attach more easily.

The liner looked okay. Tbh it was pretty similar to how I do my evening makeup normally.

I applied a few layers of mascara, just as when I’m usually putting on a fairly dramatic set of lashes, it makes it blend better overall. Then was the big moment: attaching the magnetic eyelashes to the eyeliner.

They actually looked pretty good. The best part is that if I wasn’t happy with the position I could easily remove and reattach without having to add another layer of glue.  * Shudders *

Overall, I was really pleased. I will say, however, that I did have an issue with one end popping off. It seemed like once I got one end attached, the other would unstick.

See below how the inner corner is sticking up slightly:

I’m sure I just need more practice, and I wasn’t too fussed because I could just stick it down with a tiny bit of glue.

My verdict?

I was pretty happy with them. I’d actually recommend not putting on mascara first. I think it was this that made the lashes not catch on the inner corner. Either way if you put on dark enough eyeshadow, no one would notice the difference.

I honestly just want to look good for a few pre-drink selfies. Cut to me the following morning…

I truly looked fabulous.
