Aussie ‘MAFS’ Just Aired In The US & Americans Don’t Know How To Take It

Our mates across the Pacific Ocean better be ready for the trashiest of TV experiences, because Married at First Sight Australia just aired on US television — and already viewers don’t know how to take it.

It’s important to note that MAFS in Australia is very different to the US format. The American series is comparatively rather wholesome, featuring only four or five couples each season and the contestants don’t mingle outside of their marriages, so partner-swapping ain’t a thing. Also, they actually get married FOR REAL, like it’s not just a commitment ceremony. Truly wild.

In contrast, the Aussie MAFS includes heaps of couples — often 10 or 12 every season — and all the experiment’s participants attend weekly dinner parties which, as we know, always delivers high drama.

The series just made its debut on cable channel Lifetime in the US, airing the first episode when the contestants attend the bucks/hens nights before Poppy and Luke, along with Cathy and Josh, get hitched. The reaction on Twitter is very divided. American viewers seem to love it, or firmly hate it.

Some viewers are digging our version of MAFS.

But others were not impressed with our show AT ALL.

A common criticism of the Aussie series was that the series shouldn’t allow people with kids on the show, which is something the US series does not permit. Errr, I don’t really see why this an issue. Are people with kids not equally worthy of love and marriage?

Though, to be fair, some of the other critiques the Australian series has received is absolutely warranted.

But there’s one thing we can all agree on, no matter where you might live in the world, Poppy probably should have known that she was going to miss her kids a lot.

I just can’t wait for American viewers to get up to their first dinner party episode. Ooft. They’re in for A TREAT.
