To say that Selin Mengu has proven to be a controversial Married at First Sight bride would be a massive understatement.

From her honeymoon antics calling her groom Anthony Cincotta a “princess” to her throwing him under the bus at the following dinner party, Selin hasn’t won many fans during her time on the show. Then at last night’s commitment ceremony, the experts unleashed on Selin, with Mel Schilling labelling her treatment of Anthony “demeaning”.

But now in an unplanned interview on the Kyle and Jackie O, Selin has gone rogue and told her side of the story. The phone call followed Anthony appearing in a planned interview, before both hosts said that Selin was ‘hiding’ and refusing to do interviews. Selin later told them that not doing media was “not my decision”, suggesting that Channel 9 had banned her from speaking publicly.

Selin spoke about the online abuse she’s faced since the season began. “It’s not just backlash, it’s personal attacks,” she told the hosts. “Right now, I’m emotional because people don’t know what’s going on. I’m being painted as this horrible person. I don’t want to step out of the house and be known for that.”

The MAFS star then went on to claim that the edit of herself and Anthony’s relationship isn’t painting the entire picture. “You see 1% and we film a lot! There is no context!” Selin said. “Some people understand, some people see the grey areas, but it’s just not fair that I’m dealing with this backlash when I’ve said ‘no’ to a few things and he persisted,” she said amid tears.

Selin went on to allege that on several occasions, Anthony ignored her opposition and even claimed she was made to sleep in the same bed with him despite her resistance. “I’m actually going to lose it if I don’t say these things, but on the wedding night, I asked to sleep in a separate bed because I didn’t want to [sleep with Anthony]. I’m not that type of person and okay for people to be like that. But I didn’t feel comfortable and he [Anthony] persisted, they [producers] persisted.”

She continued, “I said ‘no’ and he continued to do so — now I look like a bitch.” Selin alleged that when she said she didn’t want to sleep in the same bed, Anthony brushed off her protests. “We need to, we need to do it and that it wasn’t a big deal,” she recalled him telling her at the time. In the end, Selin built a pillow fort between them and offered to sleep on the couch.

We reached out to Channel 9 regarding Selin’s claims about the bed situation. “There is never any pressure put on participants in regards to sleeping arrangements,” the network told Punkee.

“Nine and Endemol Shine takes its obligations in respect to the health and wellbeing of the participants of this program extremely seriously. All participants have access to the show psychologist during filming, during broadcast, and once the program has ended.

“Nine also have an additional service for participants should they like or need further individual and confidential psychological support. This service gives participants access to clinicians who have been specifically engaged to support those involved in the program in relation to their experiences. This service is available to all participants for as long as they need it, it does not end”.

Along with the pressure to sleep in the same bed, Selin also claims that Anthony repeatedly ignored her requests to stop what he was doing. “It wasn’t just that. The clay thing was the third time that I said ‘no’ to things. I had an ear infection and he tried to get me in the water when we were kayaking. I said ‘no’ so many times.”

In the same radio interview, Selin went on to say that Anthony was only overly polite and gentlemanly when they were being filmed. “It was very much for the cameras… I didn’t appreciate any of this because it was not genuine.”

Selin did recognise some of her bad behaviour on the show and that her use of the word “princess” was unwise. “I know I’m not perfect, I know I’m a very very stubborn person and that’s very evident,” she said. “I know I have areas to work on.”

Earlier on Kyle and Jackie O, Anthony gave an interview and he was peddling a completely different story — he reckons that he and Selin were actually on good terms away from the cameras.

“There were a lot of times where me and Selin were away from the stress of TV cameras and we get along fine — we get along great!” he said. “If there were times we didn’t get on, I would have written ‘Leave’ [at the last commitment ceremony].”

Kyle being Kyle, he asked Anthony if he and Selin ever had sex. “Kyle mate, I’m a gentleman,” he replied. “I’m not discussing sex.” However, Selin clarified during her interview that they had never been intimate. “For the record, we did not have sex,” she confirmed.

This couple continues to go from bad to worse. I’d say it’s time to GTFO of this experiment and go love yourselves.
