This week on Meet the Memelords, we’re chatting with the admins behind ‘S l e e p y M e m e’ one of the weirdest Facebook pages floating around the net.

Sleepy Meme has a surreal aesthetic that stems from its curation of strange and obscure photos, art, and vapourware.

Despite some of the hilariously bizarre images they share, the page has gained a loyal following in excess of 200,000 Facebook fans. People dig weird shit!

We spoke to the three admins behind the page to try and grasp what ‘S l e e p y M e m e’ is actually all about…

What was the catalyst for launching Sleepy Meme and how long have you been running it?

Matt: Fun fact, this was originally a backup page for someone else’s vaporwave art page with 12 likes. But the main admin took it and renamed it “Sleepy Meme” on the 15th February 2016.

The origins came from the creator of ‘Ayy de la lmao’ shitposting too much vaporwave associated shit on his main page. This aesthetic page was made to scratch that itch whilst also sharing some more music oriented media.

Alec: About 5 months

How many admins are there?

Matt: There are 3 Major active admins, Matt, Ashley, and Alec. Others include veterans from the ayy de la lmao network and other pages.

Alec: Don’t even know.

Where do you get the inspiration behind each post? Do you make your own memes, do you steal them or a bit of both

Matt: idk, we extract most of our memes from the obscure corners of the internet, but occasionally make our own oc to express our ideas of obscurity.

Ashley: We try to post obscure memes or memes that people wouldn’t think about posting, but are along aesthetic artistic lines (most of the time) as well. Sometimes we post forgotten old memes and sometimes one of our admins takes a picture of something they see or have a friend submit something.

we also get submissions in our inbox from time to time and we will credit it. ( send us your OC memes! )

Alec: A bit of both

What do you think makes you different from other meme pages

Matt: We have an edge to live up to our name. These memes would only be creating by someone who is semi conscious. It’s a blend of cursed images, sad posting, vaporwave, and obscure art.

Ashley: We try to be consistent and bizarre with our page. Our style stems from vaporwave aesthetics so we try to throw that in when we can. We have a team of people who coordinate well compared to some other pages.

Alec: Lack of quality

You’ve cracked 28oK likes – did you ever think the page would come this far? And what are the plans for the future?

Matt: I never thought it would ever be this big! We plan on using the reach we have as a springboard to do live track mixes of vaporwave associated music. We would only make money from this once we have more original content set as our main stage for the page.

Ashely: Honestly no! The first few admins that joined did it out of boredom and people began to love our style of posts. Before long I’d get people that know about the page before even meeting me!

Alec: Likes ain’t shit til you hit a million

What is your personal favourite meme, and what is your most popular?

Matt: Supreme intelligence memes. They really push the boundaries of what humans are capable of.

Ashley: I love obscure Indian memes, show bob

Alec: Oats

What is your favourite thing about the Internet in 2017?

Matt: Everyone has to be at least somewhat self aware to survive current meme trends on facebook and youtube.

Ashley: That we all just want the 80s back when half of us didn’t even live them.

Alec: YouTube will forever be my favourite thing about the internet

Are there any other meme pages you could recommend?

Matt: Virtual Experiances, for its complete platte of aesthetics, and Shitpostbot5000 for the shear unpredictability of the memes it cracks out every 30 minutes.

Ashley: Unreality Journeys is similar in style also Things That Are Not Aesthetic is like our page but in reverse.

Alec: No, only sleepy meme
