Midori Splice Is The True King Of Nostalgic Alcoholic Drinks

Growing up in the ’00s, there were a select handful of alcoholic drinks popular in that decade that will be forever associated with partying from my youth.

Passion Pop reminds me of passing a bottle around a bonfire. Juicy Watermelon Vodka Cruisers take me back to dancing all night with my friends to the Black Eyed Peas. In darker memories, rum makes me think of the time my friend filled up a bottle of water with the spirit and offered it to me when I was, err… let’s just say, not in the mood for any more alcohol to inhabit my body.

And Smirnoff Ice Black gives me absolute PTSD, the smell to this day still turning my stomach.

But there’s one alcoholic drink that transports me like no other and that’s Midori Splice. Midori was hugely popular in the early ’00s. I don’t know why exactly but it could be because it acted as a gateway into alcohol, while still tasting a lot like soft drinks such as Mountain Dew. Midori originally came from Japan and is actually the Japanese word for green, and is a liqueur made from Japanese muskmelons and the cantaloupe-like yubari fruit.

If you were going to have your first alcoholic drink (when you were the legal age, of course!), it was much more palatable to start with Midori, rather than down a shot of tequila… although that typically came later.

However, Midori on its own is rather intense, so it’s best mixed with soft drink or fruit juice. Midori and Lemonade was a popular option, even coming in a four-pack, but nothing quite compared to Midori Splice. The flavour combo of Midori, rum, coconut and pineapple took your tastebuds on a journey to the tropics. Aloha!

Delicious! This flavour combo made Pineapple Vodka Cruisers and Passionfruit UDLs taste like bin juice. Why would you drink anything else?

A sip of Midori Splice will make you remember the time your crush kissed your best friend at a house party. A sip of Midori Splice will make you remember when you got so sunburnt at a beach party, you couldn’t move your limbs for three days. A sip of Midori Splice will make you remember that time you cried because your frenemy wore the same two-piece GASP dress to the formal.

It’s the true king of nostalgic alcoholic drinks. Prove me wrong!
