Netflix’s Yearly Wrap-Up Has Triggered Us Into Remembering How Long This Year Really Was

“Are you still watching?” In 2020, more than any other year, the answer to this (low-key judgemental) Netflix prompt was always a resounding…yes, OK!

2020 was the year that many of us were sent to work-from-home and asked to stay indoors, with very limited socialising activities. As a result, we streamed a whole lotta Netflix.

The streaming service has just released the data for Australian’s viewing habits and honestly, the only thing it’s made us realise is how long this year was. The idea that the horrendous bushfires happened this year is baffling, because it feels like an entire lifetime ago.

Let’s get into what we streamed the heck out of this year and try to remember where we all were when we did so. This should be fun.

What Australians Watched On Netflix This Year:

Action

Netflix

Movie: Extraction

TV Series: Cobra Kai

The Chris Hemsworth-starring Netflix flick, Extraction, came out in April this year and the karate-TV series Cobra Kai was released in May. Safe to say, lockdown was in full swing and I was at home enjoying these action-packed moments because I couldn’t go anywhere else.

Comedy

Movie: Holidate

TV Series: Emily in Paris

Interestingly, Netflix’s most-watched comedy pieces came out quite late in the year. Holidate was only a very recent watch and one which had us asking a lot of questions. And Emily In Paris came out in October and while it didn’t win over all critics, it found huge success with Netflix subscribers who appreciated it for being a bit silly, but easy to watch. Perhaps, ambient viewing is what we need at a time like this?

Docos

Movie: American Murder: The Family Next Door

TV Series: Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness

I can’t even begin to comprehend that Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness was this year. Like, I actually can’t. For more on Tiger King, make sure you check out the list of things that Netflix didn’t actually include in the TV series

Drama

Movie: Enola Holmes

TV Series: The Queen’s Gambit

Again, similar to the comedy genres, Enola Holmes and The Queen’s Gambit actually came out quite late in the year. Perhaps, in the easing of lockdown restrictions, we couldn’t shake the habit of a Netflix and chill session. Or, alternatively, maybe we’re all just really into chess.

Horror

Netflix

Movie: It Chapter Two

TV Series: The Haunting of Bly Manor

I saw It Chapter Two in cinemas – and, as someone who has forgotten what it is like to go to the cinemas, this fact hurts a little too much.

Reality

Netflix

TV Series: Too Hot to Handle

I simply refuse to believe Too Hot to Handle came out during lockdown. In my head, this is a 2018 thing. Feel like reminiscing on the series, why not take a trip down memory lane? C’mon, you know you want to!

Romance

Movie: The Kissing Booth 2

TV Series: Dash & Lily

Netflix

OK, I actually do believe that The Kissing Booth 2 came out during lockdown and that’s only because I vividly remember stalking Jacob Elordi’s Instagram account a lot during work hours. Having said this, it does feel like a lifetime has passed since this movie and we haven’t seen Elordi in another role since! And that’s a damn shame.

There you have it. Ah, 2020, what a year it’s been!
