Netflix has dropped another original rom-com titled Sierra Burgess Is A Loser starring Shannon Purser and Noah Centineo. You’d think a movie that brings together Barb from Stranger Things and everyone’s internet boyfriend Peter Kavinsky would be a sure-fire winner… but opinion is divided.

If you haven’t watched it yet, beware of spoilers ahead!

The film has definite pros. Shannon Purser gives a career-high performance, while Noah Centineo is just as loveable as ever (and still my soulmate, so watch your back).

Not all reactions have been positive though.

The film is inevitably going to be compared to Netflix’s last rom-com To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. It’s here where Sierra Burgess falls flat, due to the many problematic parts the movie overlooks.

Here’s a breakdown of what the internet is saying about the Netflix flick:

Sierra did some truly shitty things & it feels weird glorifying it

Are we romanticising lying and catfishing?

This scene was a punch straight in the heart

The movie isn’t perfect but Shannon Purser is an angel here on earth.

Sadly Jamey is no Peter Kavinsky

It feels like we didn’t really get to know Jamey whatsoever.

Why are the text messages not in a larger font?!

What is this, a font size for ants? I literally can’t read anything.

Veronica was the total MVP

Veronica’s character progression is some truly moving stuff.

That scene when Sierra kisses Jamey was UNCOMFORTABLE

In a v cooked scene, Veronica tricks Jamey into kissing Sierra. There’s a whole load of problems with this scene and the lack of consent. Not okay.

As were the ableist and transphobic ‘jokes’ that were thrown in

Sierra imitating a deaf person and all those nasty transphobic lines did not go unnoticed by viewers.

Overall, what it this movie supposed to teach us?

There are no heroes here, we are all just losers.

But that sunflower song was killer, tbh

Ngl, I bawled my eyes out throughout that entire song. It slapped fam.

And I truly low-key ship Sierra and Veronica

The purest relationship in this film.

And Noah still nails the role

IMHO, this dream boi should only play sensitive jocks that drive jeeps.

Tbh, I was still imagining him as Peter Kavinsky the entire time.
