The 10 Best Episodes Of ‘Round The Twist’, Ranked
There’s no TV show more uniquely Australian (or more bonkers) than Round The Twist. That’s just an indisputable fact.
The ABC kids’ series from the ’90s has now found a new life on Netflix, with every single episode ready to be watched on the streaming platform. One could argue that each episode is a classic, but there are a handful of episodes that are simply masterpieces. These are the kinds of episodes that any self-respecting Australian should have seen, and if not, should watch immediately.
These 10 episodes will make you laugh, cry, cringe, or maybe even want to vomit! That’s called range, sweetie.
Have you ever? Ever felt like this? It’s time to rank!
We ranked the 10 best episodes of Round The Twist:
10. ‘The Whirling Derfish’ – Season 3, Episode 3
Ahhh, the fish dick episode. File this under: how the hell did this get made? Bronson accidentally swallows a rare whirling derfish, which turns his penis into a propeller so that he can speed through water. In one scene, the dad sees Bronson in the bath and actually exclaims, “You’ve got a whirly willy!” This family needs some serious therapy!
9. ‘Lucky Lips’ – Season 1, Episode 9
This episode is simple: Pete consults a fortune teller for help with his crush and receives a lipstick that makes every woman around him want to kiss him. Of course, since this was the ’90s, this show got away with a lot more than what would it would’ve in today’s social climate. For instance, an adult teacher kisses Pete (a teenage boy) and Linda (yep, his own sister!) also gives Pete a pash. Dear me. It will make you uncomfortable, but is no less an iconic episode.
8. ‘The Cabbage Patch Fib’ – Season 1, Episode 4
This takes me straight back to my childhood, as even before watching the episode, Paul Jennings’ The Cabbage Patch Fib was one of my favourite books. The episode truly does the storyline justice: Pete tells Bronson an innocent lie — that babies come from a cabbage patch — and the lie then comes to life.
Bronson creeps into the garden one night and in the cabbage patch he finds a a green baby. The baby holds its breath and turns blue when anyone except Bronson holds it, which leads to hilarity as Bronson takes on the responsibility of becoming a full-time father.
7. ‘Little Squirt’ – Season 2, Episode 3
Another episode about Bronson’s dick? Why the hell not! This time Bronson is possessed by a water spirit who thinks he is responsible for part of the town’s river being turned into an aquatic resort. After Bronson convinces the water spirit this isn’t true and befriends it, the spirit helps Bronson impress the older kids in school by giving him the power to piss high in the air above the urinal. Cursed!
6. ‘Santa Claws’ – Season 1, Episode 4
This is the kind of episode that will stay with you long after the credits roll. After telling Bronson that Santa doesn’t exist, Pete meets the real Santa and he’s not nearly as jolly as expected. He’s a homeless man with long fingernails, and offers Pete two wishes for each member of the Twist family.
Unfortunately for Pete, Linda wishes that he “didn’t have such a big mouth!” which results in Pete’s mouth shrinking to a tiny hole. I’m going to be real with you here, this scene gave me nightmares for months.
Horrifying!
5. ‘Grandad’s Gifts’ – Season 2, Episode 8
Even though watching it now the fox looks like a deranged puppet, this episode will pull at the heartstrings. Linda is awoken by a strange noise in her room, and the next day she finds that lemons have mysteriously grown on the tree outside. She learns that her grandfather had killed a fox and buried the animal’s remains under the tree, then she gets a visit from the fox in her bedroom.
I still think about the little fox’s sad and wanting eyes. If you don’t sob while watching this, you’re a straight-up psychopath.
4. ‘Nails’ – Season 2, Episode 5
Round The Twist does mermen! A new cute boy at school, Andrew, peaks the romantic interest of Linda, but she’s puzzled by the fact he wears wool gloves at all times. Linda encourages Andrew to take off his gloves to discover his hands are covered in rows of scale-like nails. Linda and Andrew grow closer and even share a kiss, but Andrew’s nails increasingly spread over his body and he eventually has to leave Linda to go live in the sea. Story of my life.
3. ‘Know All’ – Season 1, Episode 10
Get ready to be spooked! ‘Know All’ is probably one of the scariest episodes of the entire series. Scarecrows? Creepy clowns? It has it all. When the Twist kids find a chest of circus clothes that have washed ashore, they decide to dress up in the costumes and suddenly acquire the ability to perform circus tricks. If this wasn’t misguided enough, they put the clothes on a goddamn scarecrow, which then (duh!) comes to life. Bad idea!
2. ‘The Big Burp’, Season 3, Episode 1
This episode is about as bonkers as this show gets. After peeing on a tree, Pete seduces a tree spirit which leads to Pete falling pregnant with the tree spirit’s baby. Pete actually gives birth to this tiny, slimy green man and he does so by burping. How is this children’s TV show not classified as a horror series??
1. ‘Without My Pants’ – Season 1, Episode 12
There is nothing funnier than the ‘Without My Pants’ episode of Round The Twist. It’s as good as this show has ever gotten. The Twists come across a ghost dog on the beach and after Pete touches the animal, he can’t stop himself from finishing all his sentences with “without my pants.”
If this wasn’t funny enough, the kids then find the dog’s owner bones and it makes them cry uncontrollably. Pete crying tied with him saying “without my pants” incessantly is just comedy at its finest.
