Over the last week, Apple TV debuted the incredibly raw documentary, Selena Gomez: My Mind And Me, which explores the life of actress/singer Selena Gomez and the battles she faced in the last six years.

Being the pop culture icon that Selena Gomez is — starting off with Barney And Friends, then Disney, and her music career — it’s without a doubt that her career in the spotlight has taken a massive toll on her health. Her relationship and breakup with music sensation Justin Bieber was heavily publicised, and in 2014 the singer revealed that she was battling lupus.

The doco really sheds a massive light on the raw emotions and experiences of Selena. Fans have taken to Twitter to express their support for the Only Murders in the Building star.

Alongside the riveting documentary, Selena also released a song with the same title ‘My Mind & Me’ which she said was inspired by “her journals over the last few years”.

The topics discussed within My Mind And Me have garnered a lot of online attention, including her breakup with Justin, her relationships with Raquelle Stevens and Francia Raisa, and so much more.

Here are the big takeaways from the Selena Gomez: My Mind And Me documentary:

1. Her relationship with Justin Bieber

During the 2010s, Selena and Justin were the It Hollywood couple. The pair were on and off from 2010 to 2017, but things officially ended in 2018.

In the documentary, Selena spoke about the meaning behind her song ‘Lose You To Love Me’, saying, “It’s me learning to choose myself, to choose life, but also hoping that people can find grace and peace in that, too. The song is about knowing that you completely lost every part of who you are, just to rediscover yourself again.”

Selena then recalled how her relationship with Justin and their highly publicised breakup made her feel haunted. “I felt haunted by a past relationship that no one wanted to let go of. Then I just moved past it, and I wasn’t afraid anymore.”

Selena went on to say that the breakup was the “worst possible heartbreak ever” but despite the hurt, it was the “best thing that ever happened” to her.

Justin has moved on from Selena and is now married to Hailey Baldwin. Due to stan culture, fans naturally pitted the two women against each other, however the air was recently cleared when Hailey talked about her relationship with Selena in a Call Her Daddy podcast episode, saying, “It’s all respect. It’s all love,” between them.

2. Her body image

Selena touched on her body image and how it impacts her mental health. During a costume fitting for the 2015 Revival Tour, Selena got emotional as she tried on clothes, saying “[I want to] look like a woman and not like a 12-year-old boy.”

“I want to have the body to wear it proudly and I want the booty that I don’t have,” Selena said.

Selena has discussed her body image prior to her documentary. In an interview with Vogue, where she recounted a bunch of iconic red carpet outfits, Selena said “I fluctuate a lot with my weight and I remember this night specifically. I didn’t feel good about my body.”

In a podcast titled Giving Back Generation, hosted by her best friend Raquelle Stevens, Selena mentioned that her lupus had heavily impacted her body image, revealing, “I have lupus and deal with kidney issues and high blood pressure, so I deal with a lot of health issues, and for me that’s when I really started noticing more of the body image stuff.”

3. Her mental health

In 2020, Selena revealed that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. In the documentary, Selena mentioned that “she didn’t know how’d she cope” with the diagnosis.

“What if it happened again? What if the next time, I didn’t come back? I needed to keep learning about it. I needed to take it day by day,” she said.

Selena reflected on how her bipolar disorder impacted her relationships, saying “When I wake up the next day, they (her mother Mandy Teefey and step-dad Brian Teefey) tell me what happened. They explain to me, they’re like, ‘Look, we know that that’s not you talking and we’re really concerned. Just know that we love you.'”

4. Her friendship with Raquelle Stevens

After the doco debuted on Apple TV, a lot of fans pointed out the behaviour and attitude of Raquelle Stevens, a friend close to Selena, who has appeared in her other projects like Selena + Chef.

Raquelle was also with Selena at her lowest, revealing in the film that she was with Selena during a psychosis episode. However, her attitude is being called out by fans, specifically in one scene where Selena is in another room where she is seen in distress, struggling with her mental health, and Raquelle walks in without really saying anything to her friend.

Fans claim that Raquelle’s body language suggests that she is annoyed with Selena.

TikTok celeb gossip account @LaurenIsGossip flagged that Raquelle is a friend of Hailey Bieber, and that she could be the reason for their recent hugging photo and that Raquelle “acts like Selena’s manager.”

Selena has yet to speak out against fans who are dragging Raquelle online, but Raquelle has disabled comments on her Instagram.

5. The unexpected fallout from her doco

In 2017, Selena had a kidney transplant, with the donor being her best friend Francia Raisa. However, after the doco dropped, Francia seemed to be unhappy with Selena for a specific quote posted by E! News.

The quote that E! posted reads, “I’ve never fit in with a cool group of girls that were celebrities. My only friend in the industry really is Taylor.” In response to this quote, Francia commented “interesting” but it was deleted.

Selena has allegedly responded writing in a TikTok comment “Sorry I didn’t mention every person I know.”

Fans also noticed that Francia unfollowed Selena, but Selena is still following Francia.

The whole thing is messy and we truly hope the girlies sort it out.
