A poll has found that more than half of pet owners reckon they enjoy the company of their animals over their best friends, which is absolutely not surprising news to anyone who has ever raised a fur baby.

Yep, that checks out.

The survey commissioned by Mercure Stratford-upon-Avon found that 53% of the 2,000 people polled preferred spending time with their pet rather than a human companion, and 17% chose their pet over their partner.

As someone who owns two cats and regularly chats to them like old friends, this is v comforting to hear. The survey also found that 57% of people felt less lonely when their pet is beside them, and three in five people said their pet helped them relax after a shitty day.

The poll also said that 79% of respondents missed their pets when they were on vacay, and a quarter felt lost without their pet with them on a trip away.

“Our pets are a huge part of our lives and can make our day-to-day lives richer than it would be without them,” said James Lys from Mercure Stratford-upon-Avon.

“We have noticed a marked increase in guests who bring their pets, specifically their dogs, travelling with them to share in the experience.”

Well, there you have it. Animals are superior to humans. Science doesn’t lie.
