Taylor Swift Broke Her *Checks Notes* $18,000 Ring At The VMAs

Darling Taylor Swift had a TIME at the VMAs.

She won a bazillion awards, had a major freak out over the presence of NSYNC, sort of cleared the air with Nicki Minaj, hugged the heck out of Selena Gomez and danced a lot to every single performance – but particularly to Shakira’s ‘Whenever, Wherever’, because she’s only human and you can’t not dance to that.

But potentially the most enjoyable sight at the VMAs was Taylor getting progressively more drunk over the course of the evening and having the absolute best time.

There was one victim to Taylor’s inebriation though, and it was a very fancy ring that she was wearing for the awards.

Taylor was spotted holding the ring in her hands and showing it to one of her team members, looking a little concerned and mouthing the words, “I didn’t even realise”.

I totally get that sinking feeling when you’ve lost or broken something – you feel like crap and awful for messing up. But Taylor seemed even more worried than most… And that may have been to do with the price tag on this teeny tiny piece of jewellery.

Reports are saying that the ring was a Van Cleef & Arpels ring that cost a not-so-cool $18,000. Okay, now I understand the level of panic. 

While this ring is definitely a custom or new-release piece from the brand, I had a gander at their website to see if there were some comparable options and I’m pretty sure it sits somewhere between their Vintage Alhambra ring (which is $5.8k) and their Bouton d’or ring which is a smidge more expensive at $32.4k.

Obviously, Taylor looked genuinely apologetic, so hopefully her team don’t get stuck with a fat bill from Van Cleef & Arpels to replace the centre stone that fell out. 

But aside from ring-gate, can we take a moment to appreciate that Taylor Swift getting drunk at the VMAs only received praise? People were relating to her, frothing over her trying to reclaim her drink from her cup holder and all-around vibing with her energy at the awards show. I know it seems like a silly little supercut, but a few years ago a woman doing this would have resulted in criticism and accusations of setting a terrible example.

To see the response to tipsy Taylor made me genuinely happy. Maybe, just maybe, society is hating women a little less now. Ahhh progress.
