Why do I feel this is somehow Gordo’s fault…

It’s been a very lengthy process. After many, many updates from Hilary Duff, the Younger actress has taken to social media to reveal that the reboot of Lizzie McGuire will not be moving forward. In a statement made on her Instagram page, Hilary said that the project “isn’t going to happen” and urged Lizzie McGuire fans to “mourn.” Sigh.

Some Essential Context About The Lizzie McGuire Reboot

Since the announcement of the reboot in August 2019, there has been a lot of open conversation about the adult-content that would appear in the show. There were creative differences, which resulted in the original series’ creator Terri Minsky stepping down in January and Hilary Duff begging Disney to allow the project to move to the American streaming service Hulu.

The supposed reboot was meant to showcase Lizzie McGuire as a 30-year-old millennial navigating life in New York City, which yes, sounded literally amazing. But evidently, the creative team and Disney couldn’t come to an agreement because today, it seems, the project has died.

Hilary Duff’s Statement

On Instagram, Hilary Duff reflected on Lizzie McGuire’s legacy saying, “I’ve been so honoured to have the character of Lizzie in my life. She has made such a lasting impact on many, including myself. To see the fans’ loyalty and love for her, to this day, means so much to me.”

Hilary Duff then ripped the bandaid off saying, “I know the efforts and conversations have been everything trying to make a reboot work, but sadly despite everyone’s best efforts, it isn’t going to happen.”

The Younger actress spoke about the creative differences, saying: “I want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today. It’s what the character deserves. We can all take a moment to mourn the amazing woman she would have been and the adventures we would have taken with her. I’m very sad, but I promise everyone tried their best and the stars just didn’t align. Hey now, this is what 2020’s made of.”

Disney’s Response

A Disney spokeswoman responded to the statement, saying: “Lizzie McGuire fans have high expectations for any new stories.  Unless and until we are confident we can meet those expectations, we’ve decided to hold off and today, we informed the cast’s representatives that we are not moving forward with the planned series.”

Just when you thought 2020 couldn’t get any worse, huh?
