Two years after the original, The Princess Switch: Switched Again dropped on Netflix over the weekend.

The movie picks up two years after the first film, which saw Vanessa Hudgens play two different characters who look the same: Chicago baker Stacey, and Margaret, the Duchess of Montenaro. They switch places in the first film so that Margaret can experience a normal life. While switched, Stacey falls in love with Margaret’s fiancé, Prince Edward, and Margaret falls for Stacey’s best friend, Kevin.

FYI: There are many The Princess Switch: Switched Again spoilers ahead so if you haven’t watched the sequel, read ahead at your peril.

In the sequel, Margaret and Kevin have split after learning that Margaret is soon to be queen. There’s a lot more switching in the second film, with the addition of a third lookalike, Margaret’s cousin Fiona, who also has eyes on the crown. The sequel culminates in Margaret’s coronation and it’s here that something bonkers happens…

Amber and Richard from the Christmas Prince trilogy are spotted as coronation guests.

On one hand, this is good news. It confirms that Netflix Christmas movies exist in the same cinematic universe, which is something fans have speculated about at length. But on the other hand, ummm…this makes no sense.

The Princess Switch fans will remember that in the first movie, Stacey watches A Christmas Prince on Netflix — so how can Amber and Richard be real people who can attend coronations, when they a merely characters in a movie?! A movie that Stacey watched?!

Eagle-eyed viewers are confused and DEMAND answers:

The only explanation is that somehow, in The Princess Switch’s universe, A Christmas Prince is a documentary about Aldovia’s Queen Amber and King Richard — which means that Amber and Richard exist IRL.

This Twitter user seems to think that’s the most likely justification for the movie’s inclusion in the first film, and they pose an interesting theory in the below thread.

Convinced? I am not. If we cast our minds back, Stacey specifically said the words “Christmas movie” while browsing Netflix before A Christmas Prince came on screen, and the plot for the movie was the same as the streaming platform’s current summary.

Exhibit A:

Exhibit B:

That doesn’t sounds like a documentary to me!!!

It simply boggles the mind and we absolutely need a third The Princess Switch to finally get to the bottom of this.
