The Five Most Unhinged ‘Glee’ Moments That Haunt My Dreams On A Weekly Basis

Glee had such a hold on me when I was a teenager. I just couldn’t help but get sucked into the lives of the William McKinley High School students. The show, created by Ryan Murphy, ran from 2009 to 2015, with the cast embarking on a concert tour in North America and Europe at the height of its popularity.

While it provided representation onscreen for a range of minority groups, there were some wacky plotlines that have been permanently seared into my brain. I’ve rounded up five of the weirdest moments across Glee’s run, ranging from that VapoRub scene to a fake elevator with a creepy puppet.

Let’s reminisce:

These horrific Glee scenes rocked me to my core:

1. When Mr Shue sang the ‘Thong Song’ to Emma Pilsbury

Let me set the scene. You’re watching Season 1, Emma Pilsbury wants Will Schuester but instead of telling him, she decides to marry football coach Ken Tanaka instead. It’s all just so romantic. The couple can’t decide on a wedding song, but how does their conflict lead to Will singing a sexually-charged mashup of the ‘Thong Song’ and ‘We Could Have Danced All Night’ to Emma… at school? While she’s in a wedding dress? Sliding around the floor with his sub-par boy band moves? Jail. Now.

2. Vicks VapoRub is now… sexy?

I think we were all screaming at Glee creator Ryan Murphy to utilise Tina Cohen-Chang more. I will also never forget nor forgive Artie Abrams dumping her because of her fake stutter. Then, in Season 4, things get weird. Tina develops an unreciprocated crush on Blaine Anderson. Instead of dealing with it like a normal person, she takes advantage of Blaine and rubs Vicks VapoRub on his chest without his consent. Did I mention she’s also straddling him while crying?! It’s sexual, terrifying, and the thought of this VapoRub scene makes my own eyes water.

@darrencriss_ What a scene. That’s all I have to say hahah #darrencriss #jennaushkowitz #blaineanderson #tinacohenchang #blainetina #vaporape #vaporub #glee #fypシ ♬ original sound – Darren Criss

3. When Sue Sylvester used a puppet to force #Klaine to kiss.

I wish I was making this up, but sadly you’ll find this storyline in Season 6, Episode 5. Sue has done some truly cooked things during the show’s run, but trapping Blaine Anderson and Kurt Colfer in a fake elevator has got to take the cake. Sue apparently couldn’t handle the thought of ‘Klaine’ being broken up, so she took matters into her own hands. Using a small Saw-inspired puppet of herself (she is her own biggest fan, after all), riding on a tricycle, she makes the pair kiss before allowing them to escape. Truly bizarre.

4. Rachel Berry giving up her lifelong Broadway dream for a TV career.

Ryan Murphy, do you think viewers are stupid? Rachel Berry would NEVER do this, especially when she nabbed the iconic role of Fanny Brice in Funny Girl. To ditch that dream for a sub-par show called That’s So Rachel? No. Just no.

5. All of Mr Schue’s wildly inappropriate decisions.

Oh boy, where to start… there are so many issues with this man. Straight off the bat, he plants drugs in Finn Hudson’s locker to force him to join the Glee club. In Season 5, he devotes an entire episode to twerking, something I’d like to scrub from my brain. And who can forget about the time he decided The Rocky Horror Picture Show (way, WAY too sexy for high schoolers) was an appropriate choice, just so he could get with Emma? Get this man a hobby immediately if not sooner.
