Melbourne is all set to host one of the oldest film festivals in the world this 28 July to 14 August, as the iconic Melbourne International Film Festival lands in town, now celebrating its 65th year.

With hundreds of films to check out, we were spoiled for choice, so we’ve picked out the best documentaries on offer this year, from the fascinating and funny to the furry and freaky.

1. Louis Theroux: My Scientology Movie

For die-hard Therouxians, as Louis Theroux’s first film made for cinema, it feels like we’ve been waiting to see this forever. The doco is essentially about what happens when you try to make a documentary about Scientology. It promises to be an intriguing and somewhat absurd watch, as Theroux is unable to break into the Church of Scientology, so instead hires actors to play influential Scientologists such as Tom Cruise and leader David Miscavige, and stages re-enactments of infamous events in the church’s history.
