The Definitive List Of The Worst Best Friends On Your Fave TV Shows
While TV shows have platformed BFF goals, from Kat, Sutton and Jane on The Bolt Type, to J.D. and Turk on Scrubs, we have also witnessed some rather shitty, one-sided friendships.
We’re talking about the kind of friends who are only caring and loyal when it serves them, or do straight-up cooked things like hook up with their bestie’s partner or endanger their friend’s job.
From Marissa Cooper on The O.C. to Ted Mosby on How I Met Your Mother, we’re here to name and shame some of television’s most awful besties.
The definitive list of the worst best friends on TV:
Serena Van der Woodsen, Gossip Girl
I will never stop writing about the fact that Serena is the worst (fictional) person in the world but her most heinous crimes were directed at her supposed best friend Blair. She slept with Blair’s boyfriend Nate and just skipped town, leaving Blair to pick up the pieces. She then stole Blair’s application answer to get into Yale — a university she didn’t even want to go to. Evil!
Ted Mosby, How I Met Your Mother
Ted was a very annoying, know-it-all character, but he was also a beyond shitty friend to Barney. He knew deep down that Barney and Robin were meant to be but continued to pursue her all the way up to their wedding. He’s a piece of trash.
Peyton Sawyer, One Tree Hill
While it was obvious that Peyton was always going to end up with Lucas, the way she went behind her bestie Brooke’s back while she was dating him was unforgivable. Peyton rejected Lucas and then suddenly wanted him when he was unavailable. She often walked all over poor Brooke, who was always a loyal friend she took for granted.
Dawson Leery, Dawson’s Creek
Dawson is meant to be the hero of the whole show, but he was actually a low-key villain. He often considered Joey his personal property but his worst crime was his treatment of his supposed best friend Pacey, who he constantly belittled. The series ending was some poetic justice right there.
Rory Gilmore, Gilmore Girls
Rory and Paris were an unlikely friendship but there was one person always pulling more weight and that was Paris. Paris was constantly taken for granted and Rory never took their friendship seriously. Don’t even get me started on Rory’s other bestie Lane, who was basically only there for Rory to vent about her own problems.
Tony Stonem, Skins
It’s important to remember that before Tony was hit by a bus, he was truly a piece of shit. He was a low-key sociopath and regularly toyed with Sid’s emotions. He raised Sid’s hopes, telling him to pursue Michelle just so he could break Sid’s heart and get back together with her. Ya nasty!
Marissa Cooper, The O.C.
The friendship between Marissa and Summer was deeply one-sided, with Summer basically being at Marissa’s beck and call, along with saving her from all the messy situations she often found herself in i.e. teen alcoholism and all that. Also if you watch the series back, Summer constantly helped Marissa work through her issues with Ryan, but Marissa DGAF about Seth. Summer was BFF goals.
Xander, Buffy the Vampire Slayer
I love Xander, I really do, but he could be seriously problematic especially in his friendship with Buffy. His behaviour ranged from slut-shaming her to acting like she forced him into some imaginary friend-zone when she told him from the very beginning she just wasn’t into him. But his worst moment was not telling Buffy that Angel’s curse could be lifted, ensuring Angel would be killed by instructing her to “kick his ass”. The absolute worst friend.
Kelsey, Younger
No shade, but I can’t stand Kelsey sometimes. Her reaction to finding out Liza’s age was so nasty, cruel and totally lacking empathy. She often treats Liza like absolute trash despite the fact Liza continues to save her ass at work time and time again and practically carries their Millennial imprint.
