This Easter Egg In The ‘Barbie’ Trailer Low-Key Reveals The Movie Plot

The Barbie trailer has arrived to make all our wildest (and pinkest) dreams come true.

From Margot Robbie’s beaming smile as Barbie to every single hilarious piece of dialogue Ryan Gosling drops as eternal himbo Ken, the trailer is a feast for the eyes and ears from beginning to end.

But my major takeaway from the trailer — other than just living for every goddamn second — was that after watching it, I still had no clue what the movie was actually about. There’s the Barbies and Kens just vibing out, we know from the cast posters that America Ferrera plays a human (??), but not much else.

Thankfully, an eagle-eyed TikToker by the name of Cat Quinn might have worked out what the plot will be — and it’s a story we’ve heard before. She reckons the film will pay homage to The Wizard of Oz, the 1939 Judy Garland film which was an adaption of L. Frank Baum’s children’s novels.

Watch Cat Quinn’s theory below:

@catquinn The Barbie movie trailer reveals a huge Wizard of Oz easter egg that could explain the plot of margot robbie, greta gerwig, and ryan goslings movie. Between the dorothy gingham dress and the movie posters plus the pink brick road and slippers, its looking clear that this will be an epic journey. #barbie #barbiemovie #barbiedoll #margotrobbie #barbiemovieedit #barbietrailer #margotrobbiebarbie #ryangoslingken #gretagerwig #wizardofoz #wizardofozmusical #greenscreen #greenscreenvideo ♬ Fun, Fun, Fun – The Beach Boys

Cat first points out that Barbie is seen wearing a pink gingham dress which is high-key reminiscent of Dorothy’s classic blue get-up in the film. In a following scene, Barbie drives past a cinema and Cat spots The Wizard of Oz playing there with posters plastered on the outside. Still need convincing? Barbie is then spotted driving down a brick road, but instead of the hue yellow, it’s of course, pink.

It looks like Barbie will play a character inspired by Dorothy, who after being dropped into a strange new world, and meeting a plethora of quirky characters, she discovers that there was no place like home. “I think we’re looking at an epic journey to another world filled with people that she helps along the way,” Cat said.

“When she gets there, she realises that this seemingly gilded place is actually pretty wicked. Will she ultimately realise that there’s no place like home, and tap her Barbie pink slippers together three times? We’ll just have to wait until July to find out.”

Cat isn’t the only person who clocked the iconic film pastiche as film critic, Courtney Howard, also spotted the easter eggs.

Barbie being linked to The Wizard of Oz wouldn’t be unheard of, as the doll’s company Mattel has previously released a range of Dorothy, Glinda, and other characters’ dolls from the 1939 film.

I’m already convinced by this theory, and tbh, if anyone was going to play the role of The Wizard, Will Ferrell as Mother sounds like the 2023 update we never knew we needed.

Barbie premieres in cinemas on 21 July, 2023.
