There’s no doubt that Drag Race Down Under has a vastly different energy to the American instalment of Drag Race.

The set is different, the pace is different, and all in all, it just feels like a completely different show. But now, it seems the internet has come up with a conspiracy theory that might explain some of these differences. The theory? RuPaul isn’t actually on set.

Mind Blown.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, ‘How could he not be on set when he’s the host of the show?’ And to that I say, it wouldn’t be the first time we’ve had that exact thought.

Let’s Talk About The Theory That RuPaul Isn’t Actually On The Set Of Drag Race Down Under

We can trace the theory back to TikToker, Amber Tara. In a video that she uploaded, she questions the strange editing and wonders if RuPaul was actually there in the second episode of the season. “I don’t think he’s actually there… So, who are they talking to when all this is happening,” Amber says “You’re speaking to a green screen?”

Abbie Chatfield Weighs In…

After this video had done the rounds on TikTok, Abbie Chatfield had added to the conversation, saying: “There are no scenes where you see queens with Ru, first of all, the responses seem like part of a script, maybe?.”

@abbiechatfield@thesaintamber YOU HAVE UNCOVERED SOMETHING. This will be many parts. Stay tuned. #dragrace #dragracedownunder #rupaul #lies x♬ original sound – Abbie Chatfield

Abbie continued, “So, I’ve clocked three times now that queens have said ‘I can’t believe I’m talking to RuPaul right now’, and that to me, that to me, says a producer has gone ‘Alright, so we’re gonna edit this because of COVID, obviously…’”

“It’s sus.” Abbie said, “It feels clunky, it feels awkward, it feels unrealistic.”

And now, after Abbie put this on her Instagram stories and on TikTok, this theory is getting a bit of traction. 90 Day Fiance star Erika Owens has weighed in with thoughts on one particular moment when RuPaul could be standing in front of a green screen.

Now, we have no idea what to do with the conspiracy theory, but we can see how people have come to this conclusion. I mean, in episode one alone, there was a very strange pre-recorded vibe to Taika Waititi’s guest appearance and there was also a runway with RuPaul out of drag. A Drag Race first it would seem.

What are your thoughts? I think it’s time we rewatch these episodes and do a little more digging.
