Louis Tomlinson has finally touched down on Aussie soil, only to be greeted with a truly awkward The Project interview, prompting One Direction stans (aka directioners) to come to his defence.

Now, if you were living under a rock during the 2010s, and tbh I wouldn’t blame you, One Direction was popping OFF everywhere. They were selling out arenas, merch, and their own perfume line, and the band even had a 1D Day dedicated to themselves, which became a live-streamed event.

The British boyband, which consisted of Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson, took the world by storm.

But like most good things, 1D came to end. In 2015, Zayn was the first member to leave the band. Soon after, One Direction went into full hiatus mode and all the boys were flung into their own solo endeavours.

Louis became a judge on The X Factor and in 2019, he announced a world tour, following the release of his 2020 debut solo album Walls.

However, Miss Rona messed up those plans. This year, Louis has finally begun his world tour, most recently performing in Brisbane.

On Wednesday night, he jumped on The Project to promo his tour and discuss his solo career — and it got awkward.

Watch Louis Tomlinson’s interview on The Project and we’ll discuss below:

The interview started off innocently, with the general questions of “how was your first performance down under?” and that kinda vibe. The mood shifted when Liam’s now infamous podcast appearance was brought up where he threw shade at Zayn, as Peter Helliar prodded Louis on how he looks back on One Direction.

“There’s been a bit of 1D beef recently thanks to Liam who has been speaking out about the band a little bit,” the cohost said. Louis snapped back that the “fishing’s begun already”, replying “I see what you’re doing.”

Instead of going into any alleged beef, Louis went on to talk about how he was super proud of his work in One Direction.

After finishing off his answer, cohost Carrie Bickmore circled back to the “fishing” comment made by Louis asking whether he was sick of being asked about One Direction, but again, the king clapped back.

“I’m more than happy to talk about it in every interview, you know, it’s something I’m immensely proud of as I already said,” Louis replied. “It’s just when you mention the beef before, it sounded like you were getting ready to stir some shit up.”

The panel of hosts all laughed at Louis’ comment, with Peter asking “Do I look like a shit-stirrer?”

Cohost Waleed Aly then jumped in, claiming to be a stirrer of shit, asking about a Harry Styles course that will commence at Texas University. “That should’ve be you, shouldn’t it?” Waleed asked.

In pure class, Louis said that he’s not interested in having any uni course built around him. “It’s a very strange thing not to be interested in?” Waleed poked at the star. Louis sassed back, “You sound very interested to be fair, maybe you should sign up.”

Throughout the interview, Louis was able to clap back with all the wit in the world — and I applaud him for that.

But in true stan culture fashion, Louis Tomlinson’s fans aren’t happy.

Some fans even labelled the interview as a “waste” and pleaded for media outlets to “do better” in their future interviews with the pop star — imploring journalists to ask about Louis’ solo career instead of digging for dirt on his former bandmates.

The Project have yet to respond to any criticism but there is one thing that we have learned from this interview: do not FUCK with the directioners.

Louis will be interviewed by Sunrise tomorrow, so let’s hope that show survives the Twitter wrath of Louis’ stans.
