Regina George In The New ‘Mean Girls’ Will Be “Very Gay” And Yes Please

I know you probably haven’t fully embraced Mean Girls 2024, but I’m on a mission to change your mind. The biggest issue with the trailer (that dropped last week and you can watch here) is that they’re attempting to hide that it’s a musical, so everybody seems to think it’s a direct remake.

Obviously, we don’t need a shot-for-shot remake, because the OG Mean Girls was perfect. But, the musical version that Tina Fey wrote for Broadway, with music by her husband Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin? It’s everything that my little musical theatre-loving heart needed.

Reneé Rapp played Regina George on Broadway, and I’m so glad that she’s reprising her role for the 2024 film. She’s broken out into the entertainment space in a big way – with a main role in The Sex Lives of College Girls as queer, spoiled rich character Leighton Murray – recently releasing her debut album Snow Angel. It’s Reneé’s world, and we’re just living in it.

And now, Reneé has confirmed that her version of Regina George will be “very gay”. If that doesn’t convince you that Mean Girls 2024 is going to be incredible, you don’t deserve this film.

Apparently, it won’t be canonical which sucks, but Reneé (who is queer herself) told Teen Vogue she’ll be bringing gay vibes. She’s also looking forward to bringing Regina 2.0 to the screen in a new and “nuanced” way.

“I like tiny things and I like subtleties and reading behind somebody’s eyes, which you can’t really do on stage. [Stage acting is] much more dramatic, which is also really sick, but I like the intimacy of a camera,” she said.

“I think especially for a character like Regina, you need all those nuances so that you don’t hate that character because she is a bitch and you have to make her likable so that‘s like a task in and of itself,” she added.

Reneé Rapp declares Regina George is gay during a concert.

At one of Reneé’s concerts, a fan handed her a sign that said “Regina is a lesbian”. Instead of brushing it off, she held the sign up and talked about the fan theory about the character.

“Tea! This says Regina is a lesbian. That is so true. So true, and I heard that from God,” she joked. “He told me. Jesus came too. It was a whole thing.”

Why are some fans convinced that Regina George is gay?

Before Reneé came onto the scene as Regina on Broadway, there were approximately a million reasons that fans thought the character was queer-coded. Here are the leading theories: Regina accused her ex-bestie of being a lesbian, she’s low-key obsessed with Cady and doesn’t seem to like any of the guys she dates. Plus, in the Burn Book she writes that Caitlin Caussin has hairy nips… how does she know?!

Hear me out: a sequel to Mean Girls where Regina ditches Aaron for Janice, because *shock horror*, she’s been pining after Janice since they were kids.

Auli’i Cravalho, who plays Janice in the Mean Girls 2024 film is on board, so I’m manifesting this into reality.
