A timeline of the whole Sabrina Carpenter, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello Mess
I’m sure you’ve already seen Sabrina’s cute new music video for her new track, ‘Taste’. And if you haven’t, you totally should. It leans into the whole retro vibe — which pays homage to the iconic ‘90s movie Death Becomes Her — co-starring Jenna Ortega.
But of course, it’s not just a music video. I guess the sun’s disappeared because I’m seeing a whole lot of shade.
For context, Shawn Mendes and Sabrina Carpenter are exes and there seemed to be some overlap between that relationship and Shawn and Camila reuniting at Coachella 2023…
Apparently, the only song we’d gotten about this particular love triangle was Camila’s ‘June Gloom’. And oh my goodness that song alone has enough tea for an entire article. But now, Miss Sabrina has seemingly hit back, shading both Shawn and Camila in her new single.
I feel like we all collectively missed the Shawn x Sabrina relationship — or I definitely did anyway. I’ve been trawling the internet to get across every single thing that’s happened between the exes and Camila Cabello, too. With all my newfound knowledge, I think we’re well overdue for a little timeline rundown.
February 2023
Everything starts back on the 19th of February, 2023. Pop culture girlie Cosmopolitan reported that Deuxmoi, who spotted Doja Cat and Joseph Quinn out and about, posted an anonymous submission to their IG story claiming that Sabrina and Shawn were spotted on a date and were “very comfortable”.
Just over a week later, Us Weekly snapped photos of the rumoured couple on a walk on February 27th. It was giving friends, but also dating, so everyone — including myself rn — was confused.
March 2023
Then on March 10th, Sabrina and Shawn are seen leaving Miley Cyrus’ album release party together. Got ‘em! And sure, they tried that whole “we’re walking out at the same time but not together” move, and it didn’t work.
March ends up being the couple’s biggest month, with videos floating around of them together spotted at the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party on March 12th and an insider source confirming their relationship to Entertainment Tonight on March 13th.
But our delulu king, Shawn, flat-out denies any relationship suspicions to Netherlands-based news source RTL Boulevard on March 17th. Now, I’m confused. I think we’ve seen this film before, and we didn’t like the ending… Then Coachella rolls around, and this is the beginning of the end.
April-May 2023
I was clutching my pearls getting across this: less than a month later on April 15th, Shawn is spotted with none other than Camila at the fest — and they were extremely loved up. There’s even footage of them kissing while dancing together.
This short-lived reunion continued into May of 2023, right up until their date at Taylor Swift’s Eras tour. There was radio silence on the Sabrina and Shawn front from this point on, and Shawn and Camila broke up for good in June.
August 2024
Things were quiet for a while, until August this year. Sabrina dropped the music video to her latest single, ‘Taste’, on August 23 — and the lyrics seem to be taking jabs at Camila..?
I asked for tea, and Sabrina gave me the whole pot. The song includes lines like, “You’re wonderin’ why half his clothes went missin’”, “I heard you’re back together and if that’s true, You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissin’ you”, “Hе’s funny, now all his jokes hit different, Guеss who he learned that from?” and even this line, “You can have him if you like, I’ve been there, done that once or twice”. Personally, I wouldn’t be feeling great if I was Camila.
There’s even a little bit of shade thrown at Shawn, and honestly it’s pretty funny. ICYMI, Shawn went viral for his role as Lyle the Crocodile, and got roasted via memes for that “la la la la la” line. And Sabrina includes a very subtle “la la la la la la la” line in ‘Taste’. Go off, queen.
Following the release of this song, we didn’t need to wait long at all for Camila (in her blonde era) to hit back. And ngl, at first I thought it was Sabrina. She made a TikTok lip syncing to her song, June Gloom, and if you know, you know.
And this isn’t the first time there’s been a back and forth between the two. Literally a week before the song dropped while Sabrina was trending, Camila posted a yacht photo that looked super similar to Sabrina’s album cover. Messy!
Finally, Camila’s also about to drop some new music and it’s looking like it’ll be shading Sabrina right back. I’m living for this feud.
To be fair, it really could all just be a complete PR move from both of their teams, and it’s working! Everyone wants in on the goss — me included. But, I guess we’ll have to wait a few more days until the next update when Camila’s song drops.
