The Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest was absolute chaos and why wouldn’t it be?
For some ungodly reason, there was a Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest in New York City yesterday. Why? Why not, I guess?? I mean, knew the 28-year-old actor had star power and an epic Gen Z following, but I couldn’t have predicted… this.
Content creator Andrew Po (whose Instagram bio reads: “I commit to bits, make art, and host events NYC”, which tracks) organised the whole thing, posting flyers all around New York City and on social media. Thousands of Timmy doppelgangers showed up, hoping to get their dainty mitts on the advertised $50USD reward and oversized trophy.
Predictably, it was chaos from the jump.
As per The Guardian’s reporting, “police ordered the large group to disperse from Washington Square Park, and organisers were slapped with a $500 fine for an ‘unpermitted costume contest’. At least one contestant was taken away in handcuffs, though police did not immediately say why.”
As for the actual competition? Glamour writer Sara Braun, who attended (bless her), described it as “a bit strange and disorganised,” explaining that Andrew and a few others interviewed “roughly a dozen Fake Timmys”.
“Miss America-like questions about the lookalikes’ plans for world peace were peppered in among more Chalamet-specific asks, like if contestants could speak French, or what they thought of the actor’s girlfriend, Kylie Jenner.”
Eventually, 21-year-old Staten Islander Miles Mitchell was crowned the winner. If his Instagram is anything to go by, this will be a canon event that the dude will be milking for many reels to come.
The craziest part about this whole story is that the real Timothée actually showed up to the event. Which, if you ask me, is fairly iconic.
“Chalamet snuck his way through the packed mob, hiding behind a black mask and baseball hat, before sneaking up on two doppelgangers posing for photos. Once he got to the middle, he took off his mask for the big reveal as shrieks quickly erupted across the park,” Variety reported.
The pictures and description of shrieking don’t quite do the chaos justice. Here’s footage from said Timmy-reveal:
It’s been a big year for Timothée. A relationship with billionaire girlie Kylie Jenner. A starring role in the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown. And now, well, this.
The sky’s the limit for this talented, high-cheekboned brunette, and for that, I tip my Willy Wonka hat to him.
