Sarah Jessica Parker Hints At Why Aidan’s Back For ‘And Just Like That’
The second season of the Sex and the City spin-off And Just Like That is about to hit our screens, and after seeing all the trailers, we’ve got one big question: why on earth is Aidan Shaw back in Carrie Bradshaw’s life? I’m sorry, but at Punkee, we’re not the biggest fans of Aidan’s character — quite frankly, he’s a bit of a toxic mess.
Sarah Jessica-Parker has now revealed why John Corbett was asked back to reprise his iconic role, saying that AJLT creator Michael Patrick King is the one who made the call.
In an interview with news.com.au, she said: “I was excited about, frankly, being on set again with John Corbett… Before the writer’s room started for the second season, [Michael Patrick King] shared this thought… about Aidan — and what a return might mean, and why.”
For SATC newbies: the show often revolved around Carrie’s love triangle, with the fashion-loving character torn between Aidan and Mr Big, played by Chris Noth.
Although she planned to marry Aidan during Season 4, she eventually ended up with Big. And because we’re not allowed to have happy endings, Big passed away after having a heart attack at the beginning of AJLT Season 1.
Anyway, there’s still a bunch of fans that are wrong love Aidan, and SJP has been incredibly diplomatic about acknowledging them.
“I know that there are audiences that feel enormous, profound affection for Aidan, and there are probably people who have strong feelings and maybe object to that relationship,” she said. “And all the ways in which it felt short in the ways it could, and should have been. Carrie has shed grief… this season.”
“[Carrie] has wanted and felt more removed from those acute feelings, and is looking at New York, once again, as a place of promise and hope, romantically and professionally.”
“Aidan impacts that because his return means that she is a different person in the city when she is with Aidan, and I don’t want to say what evolves – or what doesn’t evolve…. I kinda think I shouldn’t say more,” she finished.
Okay, so this has kinda left us with more questions than answers, but fair play to SJP, because we’re feeling intrigued. My one hope is that Carrie gets a bit of time to put the sex in SATC, and dials up this show’s horniness a bit.
Oh, and if the writers could add a few more likeable traits to Aidan while they’re at it, that would be great.
