The ‘Gilmore Girls’ Creator Hinted At *Another* Revival And I Need This To Happen

I caught up with some of my high school besties over the weekend for waffles and Gilmore Girls. We each picked a fave episode to watch (‘A-Tisket, A-Tasket’, ‘A Deep-Fried Korean Thanksgiving’ and ‘They Shoot Gilmores, Don’t They?’) and were instantly transported to our early ’00s selves.

We’ve always been Team Jess, but to my horror, my friends have started to come around to the idea of Team Dean. Thankfully, the Rory and Dean love story disappeared after the original seven-season run.

The show was finally revisited in 2016 by Netflix for the sequel Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. It was received well by critics, but the fans weren’t all on board. There were a few unresolved storylines, Rory’s character got even worse, and there wasn’t nearly enough Jess. (That last one is obviously *my* opinion, but I stand by it.)

I, personally, was also hoping that there would be justice for Lane Kim, one of the best characters from the entire show. But no, she was still married to her dud husband Zack and raising twins. In an alternate universe, she’s living her best life with Dave Rygalski and touring the world with Hep Alien.

Will there be a sequel to Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life?

While AYITL wasn’t perfect, I would absolutely binge-watch another return to Stars Hollow if original creator and showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino was involved. And conveniently, she’s open to the idea.

“The thing about families is they never work their shit out,” she told Rolling Stone recently. “They are dysfunctional forever and because of that, it’s the best possible way to come up with stories because you will never solve your problems there.”

“Running a show is magic, in a way… I’m personally a believer in that middle-of-the-night feeling where your eyes open and you’re like, here we go. I think we’re all feeling like if that happens, we’re game to jump in again.”

The last episode of the miniseries finished with a cliffhanger after Rory announced she was pregnant. Fans are pretty convinced the baby is Logan’s, who she’s been having an affair with but she’ll end up with Jess. It’s a clever parallel to Lorelai’s own life: Logan represents Christopher and Jess represents Luke. But will we ever get to meet the little one?

“I think it would be interesting to see a baby and a kid and what that next Gilmore Girl round would be,” Amy said. “This show is so much bigger now than when it was on the air and when it went on Netflix, everything started all over again.”

Could there be a Lane Kim Gilmore Girls spinoff?

Amy also told the publication that she wasn’t satisfied with how Lane’s story ended, and admitted that there wasn’t enough time in AYITL to spend on the character.

“I never really liked the way Lane’s life shook out. I would have liked to have spent more time on her, especially since she’s patterned after my best friend. Sorry, Helen [Pai],” she said.

When asked if there could be a Lane Kim spinoff – similar to how Jess Mariano was supposed to have a spinoff Windward Circle after Season 3 – Amy dished on a K-Pop storyline that didn’t make the final cut.

“One of the storylines that we had to drop because we just didn’t have enough time to shoot it – or enough money, frankly – was we wanted Mrs Kim to manage a K-Pop band. This was years before I even knew who BTS was. I sorta feel like, goddammit. That K-Pop story would’ve been so cool,” she said.

Brb, heading to pray to the Gilmore Girls gods for another revival.
