Australian TV is weird and sometimes terrifying but you know what show was amazing? H2O: Just Add Water and I won’t hear a word against it.

A show about three teenage girls who turn into mermaids whenever they come into contact with water? Truly inspired TV. Cleo, Rikki and Emma made us all want mermaid tails, and their high school drama was so relatable. They’re just like us! Except they’re mermaids. Close enough!

As you’d expect from a show about teenagers who moonlight as mermaids, H20: Just Add Water had its fair share of weird storylines. There’s the time that a water tentacle came out of Cleo’s bath plug. Or the time that Miriam “Regina George of the Gold Coast” Kent gets frozen.

There’s also, you know, the core concept of girls who became mermaids after they swam in a magic lake under the full moon.

Here are 12 of the weirdest storylines in H20: Just Add Water:

#1. The water tentacle that harasses the town

A giant tentacle made of water appears around town causing trouble for the mermaids. Great — now they have to figure out what’s up with this weird wet tentacle AND get through their last year of high school. Big mood.

Even though it attacks them, kidnaps them and tries to turn them into water (weird flex but okay), they realise that it’s actually on their side and warns them about a comet that’s about to hit the earth. Speaking of…

#2. The comet that’s about to hit the earth

When the mermaids discover that a comet is about to hit the earth, they use their powers (they have superpowers, obviously) to form the Tower of Light — which is really just a pillar of hot water that stretches up into space, but make it fashion.

The comet bounces off the water (I guess) and the earth is saved.

#3. The mermaids go full Carrie

Cleo’s little sister finds her mermaid drawings and immediately assumes the only logical explanation is that Cleo is a mermaid. She decides to out Cleo by spraying her with a hose when she’s on stage at a beauty pageant. The sister is, like, 11 years old, and this seems like too much for an 11-year-old.

#4. Cleo turns into a siren

One of the rules in H20: Just Add Water is that if the mermaids look at the full moon, crazy things happen to them. One time it turned Cleo into a siren and all the boys in the town fell in love with her. Meanwhile, I can’t even get a single date on Tinder. I feel personally attacked by this show.

#5. Literally every time the mermaids look at the full moon

I don’t mean to brag, but if I knew I couldn’t look at the full moon I wouldn’t struggle with that at all. But somehow, these girls get tricked into seeing it almost every month. Emma sees its reflection in a bowl of punch. Cleo spies it in the reflection of some water in the bathroom sink. Rikki gets tricked by a reflection in a glass of water. Honestly, this show, it’s irresponsible.

#6. Emma cryogenically freezes Miriam

In a classic prank, Miriam unplugs the cool room at the cafe where Emma works. Emma uses her powers to freeze it again but doesn’t realise Miriam is still inside until they find her frozen stiff the next morning. Another classic prank!

I’m not a doctor, but Miriam 100% should have died or gotten superpowers from this.

#7. Bella sneezes herself into being a mermaid

We have many questions for this show. Number one: how dare you. Number two: why don’t the mermaids grow tails when they sweat?

H20 plays fast and loose with its “they turn into magical mermaids when they get wet” rule. So they don’t turn into mermaids when they cry, but Bella can use her mermaid powers when she sneezes? H20: Just Add Water, ya been fact-checked.

#8. Rikki gets kidnapped by scammers on her birthday

Goons set up an undercover counterfeit money operation in town and take Rikki hostage. And it’s her birthday, which everyone knows is the worst day of the year to get kidnapped on.

#9. The mermaids pull a sickie but are so extra that a doctor thinks they have a disease

Have they never heard that less is more when you’re lying to your parents? Cleo, Rikki and Emma use their powers to give themselves skin sores and fevers, and are rushed to hospital because the doctor thinks they have a rare tropical disease. Next time ladies, simply just cough a few times.

#10. Zane, a teenager, buys a cafe

Technically he uses his dad’s money but still, he is a teenage boy. And teenage boys are, famously, not very smart. The fact that he actually runs a successful business is an even weirder storyline tbh.

#11. A dolphin falls in love with Cleo

One of the dolphins at the Marine Park where Cleo works has a crush on her and will only eat food from her. She sneaks out all the time to feed him, so her family assumes she has a secret boyfriend.

Her dad teams up with her best friend to figure out who she’s dating, and all these men need to chill.

#12. Rikki is tricked into becoming an illegal fish trafficker

If that sounds too outrageous, you obviously haven’t been paying attention to this show.

H20: Just Add Water is what Australia should be remembered for.
