Brent Vitiello has had a tumultuous journey on this season of Married at First Sight.
From his very first meeting with new wife Tamara Djordjevic, the two have taken us on an absolute rollercoaster ride – from fighting over a cake knife on their wedding day, to making up on their honeymoon, to fighting again after moving in together, before patching things up again. Basically at every commitment ceremony, we have no idea if these two are on track or not.
While the Domenica and Olivia feud overshadowed most of our couples during couples retreat week, things weren’t going well for Tamara and Brent and apparently there was a lot we didn’t get to see, with the couple fighting constantly during the retreat, resulting in them moving into different apartments upon their return to Sydney.
Brent has spilled some of the tea in a recent interview with Megan Pustetto from So Dramatic! taking us through his and Tamara’s journey from when he surprised her with flowers with a card saying ‘Mrs Vitiello’ to the couples retreat that resulted in a screaming match as the other couples looked on.
Here’s the tea Brent from Married at First Sight spilt during his latest interview.
On what it was like being a spectator to the Olivia and Dom fight.
“It was as intense as what was shown. I was very neutral when it happened. We had just come from having so much fun, and then hearing this dramatic story, so we were heavily invested in the story! Then I ended up speaking to Ella a bit later, who said that wasn’t what happened and there was no swinging of it [the wine glass]. And don’t forget we’re watching live with everyone else, so when I saw the footage, I thought OK, well she doesn’t have the rest of the glass, she wasn’t swinging it, there’s nothing of the sort. She just smashed it. It’s not exactly what we heard. The rest of it from then on is very hard to watch.”
On where he and Tamara stood during the retreat.
“There was a lot that wasn’t shown, we got into very heated arguments from day one that kind of came out of nowhere. It was just a lot.”
Brent goes on to explain once they moved into the guesthouse with Dom and Jack on the retreat (Tamara’s call, because Brent had previously found them another room in the house), everything was going well then out of the blue Tamara said she didn’t want to stay with him that night.
“We’re having a drink, and having a laugh, and then out of nowhere Tamara said to me ‘I don’t think I’m going to stay with you tonight, don’t get upset’, and I said ‘what do you mean? I came back to this part of the place because you wanted me to’ and it was basically like ‘you guys just want to party’.
So it kind of started from there, it was just all downhill. I don’t know what the real reason was… there were articles on Daily Mail about sources saying they heard us screaming or heard Tamara screaming at me on multiple occasions.”
On the fight that made it to a promo but never aired.
“Oh, I forgot about that, when I was drinking the water and walked off! She was screaming at me and I just… it was no surprise, I think a lot of it I was quite defeated and I think my only escape was time with the boys and just trying to enjoy the environment I guess.”
“I just wanted to find middle ground because we could not stop fighting, so I just went, ‘look I know we’re not going to see eye-to-eye now and that’s OK, but why don’t we just try and meet halfway and see where each other’s coming from’, and that conversation ended with her yelling at the top of her lungs and standing over me, it was brutal. Everyone was staring, it was really bad.”
On Tamara ignoring their relationship to help other people’s pairings.
“The last time was just her yelling, she just stood up and absolutely lost it, and then walked off. It was a bit much, but oh well, it was interesting. What the conversation was, she was going around to every other relationship trying to fix their relationship and I said well, what right do you have to fix everyone else’s relationship if you can’t fix your own. When we were at the boys’ night, we said to each other it was just a way out. She has no emotional maturity and didn’t have a way to say it, so it looked like she wanted a way out.”
On all the flowers he gave to Tamara, addressed to Mrs Vitiello.
“If anyone knows me and my humour, I would’ve done that and never thought about it again. I wasn’t on one knee, kissing her feet, I wouldn’t have thought about that at all. It wasn’t a tactical move, I didn’t know anything of it [Tamara’s reaction] until watching it back.”
On Tamara allegedly badmouthing Brent to the other contestants.
“Let it play out. I don’t know what’s going to happen or what will be shown, but I’ll let that one play out.”
On how Tamara and Brent have made it so far into the experiment.
“Perseverance! I can’t give anything away, but we put a lot of effort in. I can speak for myself when I say I put everything I had into this. I swore to myself, I swore to my family I’d try my hardest. It’s part of the growth and learning and do it the right way, at least to make yourself proud.”
“Because we started so rocky and we got to a good place of getting along, the experiment can work. When you’re put into that place, you can develop feelings, and you do start liking them. I was obviously never in love, but we liked each other. We are trying to understand each other while going through the stresses of everything else as well.”
On returning back to Sydney and going to the dinner party separately.
“Nothing really happened, we just stayed in separate places and tried to gather ourselves. I didn’t want to be that person that sat there and just spoke about her when she wasn’t there. It was out of respect [I told the boys] that I wasn’t sure what was going on, I don’t know what the end result is, but I don’t want to speak about it until she’s here.”
On people saying he’s been patient with Tamara.
“It was such a bit thing for me with this experiment because I never was patient. I spent years trying to develop that, especially in a relationship, because me not being patient was a big factor in things going wrong. So this was a huge thing for me trying to learn and fix which is why I tried to stick to that so much.”
On the tense, silent start to the dinner party.
“There was no editing, it was really that silent. Everyone was just exhausted. I think it was more like, let’s just eat, we were on edge waiting for this fight to erupt again. We just didn’t want to be the instigator to make it erupt so everyone was too worried to open their mouths. And plus I was just hungry!”
On Carolina and Daniel’s affair and Sunday’s “big” episode.
“I don’t want to say anything to that, because it’ll rile me up. I have no comment nor do I ever want to speak about them. Dion was a very good friend of mine in this whole experiment and what was going on — and believe me, we had no idea — it just rubbed me the wrong way.
You got all of us going through hell and fighting for these relationships to work and I just didn’t respect what was going on. It’s just the nerve of it. I promise, none of us had any clue. It was a lot to take in. Sunday’s going to be the big one for everyone to watch, I promise you it’s going to be a big episode.”
On his rumoured romance with Ella.
“Me and Ella are really close now, not like that. We just found common ground and we became really close and confided in each other and we give each other great advice. We’re very similar. We’re close with Dom and Jack, and Al and hang out quite a bit. That’s pretty much it.
On the beach photos with Ella.
“I know how it looks, but we were having a good time just chilling and enjoying some time away from everything. I wanna make sure Ella was protected from the sun and [starts laughing].
We’ve seen the comments, we had a laugh about it. We’re just trying to get through what’s going on. We’re human, we’re still trying to take it all in.”
On this year’s MAFS bromance.
“We [all the boys] still talk as normal. The biggest thing we boys spoke about was not letting anything that happened get between us and as long as we’re in the experiment, we get it right, and we do it by the book. That was important to us.
I wasn’t sure how united everyone would stay, because at the first bucks party, we said if our wives argue it’s up to us to not let it get between us and not get involved. We can always stick up for our wives if need be, without being callous. And we kept to it, every single person did.”
