I’m Team Jeremiah And You Can’t Change My Mind

I don’t know how it happened, but I’ve become addicted to The Summer I Turned Pretty on Amazon Prime. I’m not the target demo, seeing as I’m a 30-something millennial and the show revolves around a teen love triangle, but it’s completely taken over my life.

If you’re new to the world of Team Conrad and Team Jeremiah, let me give you a quick rundown. We’ve got our main character, Isabel Conklin, or “Belly” for short, and a set of two family-friend love interests who just happen to be brothers.

One of them, Conrad Fisher, only paid Belly attention when they were younger because his mum forced him to, while Jeremiah Fisher was always sweet to her.

The show is created by Jenny Han (who wrote To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, my comfort movie), and she’s also the co-showrunner. The title seems random, but it just refers to the fact that once Belly hit her late teens, she became a Really Hot Girl.

Belly has been crushing on Conrad all her life, and in Season 1, she toyed with the brothers’ emotions, making out with Jere before realising she actually had a chance with Conrad. So, she did as any Hot Girl would do, and left Jere without a second thought. And yes, Belly is kinda the worst.

Season 2 has been dropping on Prime Video weekly, and Belly’s relo with Conrad has now turned to dust, after his mum Susanna passed away from cancer. In an effort to save their beloved beach house, the group are reunited again, and there have been some incredibly awkward moments.

Belly has been growing closer to Jeremiah, and although he’s been burnt once, they finally made out in Episode 7. I’m not ashamed to say I legitmately cheered.

There’s a huge debate blowing up my feed about whether you’re Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah, and I think the book purists are always going to stay on the Team Conrad side.

But I’m firmly Team Jeremiah, so here’s all the reasons I think Jelly is end game, and Conrad is, as my co-worker said, a “wet blanket”.

1. When the kids were younger and Belly was sick, Jeremiah stayed home for an entire week to keep her company. Where was Conrad? Crickets.

2. The chemistry between Lola Tung, who plays Belly, and Gavin Casalegno, who plays Jeremiah is OUT OF THIS WORLD. When Jeremiah grabbed Belly’s neck as they made out at Brown? Absolutely perfect. No notes.

3. Jeremiah has always wanted Belly. Before their super cute pool kiss in Season 1, Jere confesses that though she’s his best friend, he always wanted more. Friends to lovers? Obsessed.

4. Conrad forgot to bring Belly’s corsage for prom, and then tries to get Belly to leave early. Then, when he decides to ditch, Belly gives him her infinity necklace and he doesn’t try to fight for her. He drives off, so, good riddance to him.

5. When Jere was desperately trying to fight his feelings in Season 2, he had the chance to kiss Belly during a game of Truth or Dare. When Belly confronted him about why he didn’t go through with the kiss, he said this: “Because if I kiss you, I don’t know that I could ever stop”. Oh, he’s defs in love.

6. Conrad is two years older, so can’t he find a girl his own age? He’s at college and Belly is in high school. Ick.

7. Jere was so hurt when Belly chose his brother over him (honestly, fair), but he loves her so much he’s willing to give her another chance? Belly, pls, you can’t do better than this man.

8. Conrad apparently still loves Belly, bla bla bla, but just mopes around instead of actually telling her. There’s zero chemistry here. Sorry Conrad, you’ll have to settle for being a brother-in-law.
