There are few shows more addictive than Netflix’s serial killer series You. It’s the kind of show that when you watch it, time ceases to exist and all of a sudden you’ve watched an entire season in one sitting.

Debuting in 2018 and starring Penn Badgley as stalker/murderer Joe Goldberg, the series quickly became a phenomenon. Season 1 saw Joe obsessed with New York writer Beck before murdering her, then in Season 2 Joe was back on his bullshit, becoming infatuated with aspiring L.A. chef, Love. However, everything was turned on its head when Love turned out to be just as sick and twisted as Joe. The second season ended with Joe and Love expecting a baby and moving to a new home in the suburbs, but the final minutes provided a cliffhanger as Joe found another target for his next crush.

Thankfully, a few weeks after Season 2 dropped, Netflix renewed the series for a 10-episode third season. So what do we know about the next installment? We did a deep dive to dig up everything we could find about the upcoming season.

Absolutely Everything We Know About Season 3 Of You:

Who will be back?

Murdersome couple Joe and Love (aka Badgley and Victoria Pedretti) will obviously be reprising their roles. While Forty was shot and killed by Detective Fincher in Season 2’s conclusion, the show has a tendency to bring people back via Joe’s visions (aka Beck returning) so it wouldn’t be that surprising for him to reappear in some capacity. The actor who plays Forty hopes this will happen, admitting in an interview, “I would love, like, Ghost Forty,” James Scully told The Wrap.

Another character who left the show, but has a lot to hold over Joe’s head is Ellie. Last we saw of Ellie, Joe sent her off to Florida with a handful of cash after Love killed Ellie’s sister, Delilah. The show’s creator Sera Gamble has heavily hinted that we haven’t seen the last of her. “Ellie is still in Joe’s life. He’s sending her money. She hates him, but he is sending her money. So that door remains open for us,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

Aside from the current cast, the new season will welcome a bunch of new characters. Firstly, there’s One Tree Hill’s Michaela McManus as Natalie, Joe’s next-door neighbour aka his new obsession. Late ’90s heartthrob Scott Speedman will play CEO Matthew, who will likely play Natalie’s husband.

After’s Dylan Arnold also joins the series as Theo, “a college student with a strained and complicated relationship with his stepfather”, while Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina villain Tati Gabrielle will play a librarian, alongside actor Ben Mehl.

Search Party star Shalita Grant will play mum-fluencer Sherry, a mean girl who pretends to welcome Love into her social circle, while relative newcomers Shannon Chan-Kent and Chris O’Shea join Sherry in their parenting clique. Joining the new faces will be Travis Vanwinkle (Joe’s new wealthy friend), Ayelet Zurer (therapist Dr. Chandra), Mackenzie Astin (geology professor), and Jack Fisher playing a young Joe.

What will Season 3 be about?

Gamble told THR that the next season will be centred in suburbia. “I will say that when we originally sold the show, we very broadly described it as each season would be a new love obsession and a new world. Season 1 is Beck in New York, and Season 2 is Love in L.A., and so we are evoking where we would like to go [in Season 3], which is to a much more suburban, insular world, where Joe would be a complete fish out of water,” she said.

The second season ended with Joe finding out Love shared his history of committing multiple murders, before she told him that she was pregnant with his child. The finale culminated in the couple moving to a new home in the suburbs, and we see a glimpse of the old Joe as he peers into his neighbour’s yard, setting his sights on his next obsession. “I think to me, the most important thing about that last scene is just it is confirmation that Joe is still Joe, in a way that’s not going to be great for Joe,” Gamble explained.

“He has not learned that he cannot just keep looking for the next person to attach his hopes and dreams to that way. It seems clear that he’s falling into some version of that same pattern. I can’t say that we know exactly what a Season 3 would be, but I can say things won’t go well for Joe.”

So, who is the neighbour? Fans were quick to theorise that it might be Joe’s mum, however Badgely quashed that theory in an interview. He revealed to Bustle, “She’s definitely not his mum. I can say that.” WELL, ALRIGHTY THEN.

Maybe the woman is a potential love interest? The author who wrote the books that the series is based on, Caroline Kepnes, has a soon-to-be-released third installment called You Love Me, and the book’s blurb contains some possible hints for what to expect from Joe next season:

“Joe Goldberg is back. And he’s going to start a family — even if it kills him. Joe Goldberg is done with cities, done with the muck and the posers, done with Love. Now, he’s saying hello to nature, to simple pleasures on a cozy island in the Pacific Northwest. For the first time in a long time, he can just breathe.

“He gets a job at the local library — he does know a thing or two about books — and that’s where he meets her: Mary Kaye DiMarco. Librarian. Joe won’t meddle, he will not obsess. He’ll win her the old fashioned way… by providing a shoulder to cry on, a helping hand. Over time, they’ll both heal their wounds and begin their happily ever after in this sleepy town.

“The trouble is… Mary Kaye already has a life. She’s a mother. She’s a friend. She’s… busy. True love can only triumph if both people are willing to make room for the real thing. Joe cleared his decks. He’s ready. And hopefully, with his encouragement and undying support, Mary Kaye will do the right thing and make room for him.”

Intriguing! Could his next obsession be a librarian? It’s hard to say, as the series has a tendency to go off-script and so far, some of the series’ details have differed from the books. Another added element for the new season will be the return of Love’s mom, Dottie (Saffron Burrows), who is expected to play a much bigger role in the upcoming season, after being promoted to a series regular.

Showrunner Patrick Gamble told Entertainment Weekly that, “I have so many questions about Love’s mother who’s incredibly in the picture at the end of the season, like how much she really knows about her children? We wrote [the finale] hoping that we will get the opportunity to tell more story because we’re really excited with the seeds planted at the end of season two.”

Finally, will Season 3 be when Joe gets arrested for all the, err.. murdering? Maybe! Badgely revealed what he wants to see happen to the character, telling ET, “What does Joe need? Joe needs, ugh, Joe needs justice, but what does that mean? Does that mean prison? Does that mean death? I don’t know.”

Will next season be the series’ last?

If Gamble has anything to do with it, it’s unlikely that Season 3 will be the end of Joe’s tale. “I will say that we have a lot of stories still to tell. I am not scared at all of saying that we definitely could follow Joe for several more seasons,” Gamble told THR.

“That being said, it’s a tough TV landscape right now. There’s about 10 billion TV shows and orders are shorter and there’s more competition, so we never really save anything for later seasons. Our rule of thumb is always just if we have a great idea we’re going to give it to you right now. Because we believe in the world that Caroline gave us and we believe in these characters, we just know they’ll keep finding really fucked up shit to get into.” Damn straight.

When can we expect Season 3 to drop on Netflix?

While filming began in February, because of restrictions due to coronavirus it had to be halted. The show announced in November that filming had finally recommenced, which means we will be getting the show later than usual.

Since filming started nine months later than expected, instead of the season dropping around Christmas time in 2020, we might have to wait as long as July/August, or even until the 2021 holiday season.

Hopefully, we don’t have to wait too much longer as we all need another hit of drama ASAP.
